Emily and Cian, who both come from County Waterford first met during a night out in Dungarvan in early 2012 and began texting before going on a few dates.

The couple who share a love of travelling got engaged during one of their trips away;

“The proposal happened in Colombia. We try to go away to different places every year for a few weeks and had been travelling around Colombia for a month when Cian found the right moment! Cian felt something had always happened and on the second last day he felt he was running out of time so popped the question! He had said we should go back up to Monserrate but I said we needed to get a few presents before flying home the following day. Cian proposed that morning while we were still in bed just incase we didn’t get time to go back up the mountain – we did make it back up there in the afternoon and it was wonderful,” explained Emily.

“We chose to have a slightly vintage wedding with antique style touches, which reflected in my choice of wedding dress. I wanted something different, alternative and comfortable and sourced the perfect dress in County Kerry,” said Emily.

The couple were keen to get straight into wedding planning but were relaxed about it and concentrated on choosing the best venue with great food for their fun and relaxed day.

“We shortlisted a few venues based on food reviews and then went to see them. When we called into Ballyseede Castle we knew this was where we wanted to get married. The staff and atmosphere were fantastic. We couldn’t think of anything better than having the ceremony and reception in the same venue but yet in different rooms and having the gardens right outside suitable for any photographs. They had a few dates available and we provisionally booked a date,” added Emily.

“We had a fantastic day and weekend, the sun was shining from Friday to Monday. The staff at Ballyseede Castle could not have been better – their attentiveness, helpfulness and politeness were brilliant. The ceremony was very personal and non-traditional with a seed blessing and hand-tying included. Helen Grubert from Interfaith Ministers had a personal, engaging, meaningful and light-hearted ceremony written for us. The entrance song was kindly provided by Maria Gamst from Norway who wrote the piano version of ‘Are you With Me’ by Easton Corbin. I had stumbled across this online last year! We provided our own ‘old-school’ sweets for a sweet stand, and the canapés were delicious. The dinner was so tasty, service again was brilliant and the singing waiters went down a treat. Our wedding cake was made at home by my mum, Alison Fletcher with help from me with decorating. As most of the wedding was not totally traditional the back of the cake had three quotes that meant a lot to myself and Cian, this writing was done by our friend Aoife Fenlon. The dance floor was packed all night long as was the residents bar until gone 5am!” added Emily.

Emily’s Highlight: Walking down the aisle with my dad, surrounded by our closest friends and family and seeing Cian waiting at the top of the ceremony room, smiling.

Cian’s Highlight: Watching Emily walk down the aisle – I forgot all my nerves and may have had a tear in my eye.
