djarticleDarragh Jones of Digital DJs gives us his expert advice on choosing your Wedding DJ.

One of the most important decisions a wedding couple will be faced with is who or what to have as their wedding entertainment on the night. There are so many choices and options available nowadays that it is worth investing time and effort to pick and choose what is right for you.

For many couples, they will choose their band or DJ having seen the act previously or having received recommendations from friends who are already married and can readily recommend suppliers.

First Things First

The first thing that needs to be decided is whether you want a DJ for the whole night or to play after a band. Having a DJ for the whole night is now becoming a popular choice, not only for reasons of cost but also the fact that DJs can be more versatile and flexible in moving through genres of music. I won’t argue that a DJ is better than a live band. Djs will never replace live entertainment. It’s up to each couple to decide what will suit their own wedding best.

Band's DJ v separate DJ

One of the common dilemmas when selecting a DJ is whether to go with the band’s DJ or hire one separately. The argument here seems to centre on the fact that the band’s DJ will be ready to start straight away as opposed to a separate DJ who will take time to setup when the band is finished. I must point out that this is simply not the case for any professional DJ or company who will always ensure they are setup and ready to start as soon as the band finish, making it a seamless transition from band to DJ. In many cases the band’s DJ will be cheaper but this is often because it's not a full time / professional DJ but a member of the band. There are bands that offer a DJ service and hire a separate professional DJ also, so it is important to find out what you are getting from the band.

Price

One of the mistakes many couples make when booking a DJ is to ask solely the price. It may seem very tempting to go with the cheapest quote. As the entertainment is something that is so crucial to the success of the night it needs to be given careful planning. There are many types and standards of DJ out there – full time, part time, club DJs, wedding DJs etc. When comparing prices it is important to compare like with like. Interview your proposed DJ to find out exactly what you can expect on the night.

Questions to Ask

Sample questions might include

  • How much experience do you have in playing at weddings?
  • What type of equipment do you use? Will the sound system be powerful enough to match your need if having a large function room?
  • Are you willing to travel?
  • Do you have backup equipment?
  • Can we see you in action anywhere?
  • Are references available from couples or venues that have used you services? Is there any feedback on internet forums etc?
  • Do you accept playlists?
  • When do you setup? (Ensuring the DJ will be ready to start as soon as the band is finished, if playing after a band)
  • Have you worked in our wedding venue before?
  • Are there any hidden extras?
  • Will you provide a receipt and confirmation of booking?

Good luck with choosing your wedding DJ!
