Question for winter brides???

Postby amyl2be » Sun Aug 15, 2010 6:44 pm

Hi ladies, :snowman

Just wondering if any body is wearing a cloak or fur shrug? Im wearing a slinky Dress with a droopy back and full lenght veil. If the weather is freezing (as it most likely will be) will I look a bit silly with out something?, Also will a belero/shrug/cloak look silly over the dress but under the veil, should it be one or the other? And as the back of the dress drops down at the back a shrug prob wont be low enough at the back?

What to do? :banghead

I'm wearing an organza bolero with mine. Also wearing a veil and it looks lovely with it. You'll be freezing if you don't wear something....not that organza will do me much good ha ha

i duno i think its a personal preference really.... sometimes the cloak/bolero can really make the outfit look amazing and wintery but other times the fur 1's can be too much.. im having a winter wedding but at the moment havnt got anything other than my veil to cover my shoulders, but i dont think ill even feel the cold with the total excitement!

Im getting married in Dec & Im wearing a long sleeved ivory fur bolero & a full length veil....it looks fab with my dress!! Im only wearing it for moving outside....to & from cars etc....& also for some of the photos. Im not wearing it in the church as our church is small so wont be too cold.

My dress is a heavy duchess satin so i think it can take a fur or feather shurg. I haven't got it yet but have looked at some pics online. However the girl in the dress shop said that I should have either a shrug or a veil - not both?

Marcs-girl, you have both though and said that it looks fab so maybe I need to rethink?? :?
I really love that warm, cozy wintry feeling and am already hoping for snow!!! :snowman

The girl only giving her own opinion on what she thinks looks best. It's up to you what YOU like and what you think looks best on YOU, so don't forget! It's great to get the advice and peoples opinions but it's your decision at the end of the day - you're the one wearing it. So take all the advice, digest it and then try on the dress with everything (or sample ideas) yourself and then make the decision. I got the same advice from shop I was in - veil would look too much with the bolero, it's one or the other, my mother was of the same opinion (she doesn't like veils anyway, so that's another story!), but I had it in my head that I really wanted to wear a veil, so tried it on with the dress and bolero anyway, and even the woman in the shop changed her mind and said it actually worked to her surprise! Even if she hadn't said that i would have still got it anyway! It's what I wanted!

Im also getting a bolero jacket! but my sis had a shawl made out of same material as the dress and had the same design on it, just to wrap around her shoulders and it was lovely! and she was happy out cos it kept her covered a bit durin the day!
:iagree the girl i the shop onl gave her own opinion. if u want both, have both! try on a few different ones together and see which ones you like!!

Am definitely getting something - don't know what yet - probably a fur shrug

Will take it off for the church and some photos - especially the photos inside - but will need something for when we are outside - a bride with goosebumps is not a good look :rofl

What you're looking for is a kinsale cloak (like the one in the Scottish widows ad). My mother wanted me to have one but having ceremony and reception in carton house, so I won't be outside and they will have fires lighting I think. Kinsale is a very demure over a 'slinky' dress.

Yeah I guess that's true. I suppose I just trusted her opinion but of course everyone has different ideas about what looks nice. My only worry is that I will only be home 3 weeks before the wedding - is that enough time for me to find a veil and/or shrug? I live abroad so there's nothing I can really do about it but I might pick up a not-too-expensive shrug here and hope that it looks ok? I have a swatch of the material so should be able to get the color right.
Planning the whole wedding from another country is quite hard! :crazy
Thanks so much girls - your advice and opinions are keeping me sane!

I work in a high end retail store as a visual merchandiser, dressing mannequins and the windows, so it's my job to customise outfits, but I strongly feel a shrug and veil together would be overkill! Especially if it's a fur or angora or a stole your veil, veils are quite strong as it is and duchess satin may be subtle but it holds it's shape, it's a dense fabric and catches the light beautifully so you wantto play along with it.
If you really want shoulder coverage or warmth would you consider an ornate hair comb with marcasite on it or get your florist to make some orchids up to put on our hair? Then you can do a shrug. Monsoon have really pretty ones.
I have a website bookmarked on my laptop at home for hair combs if you want I can hive it to you later?

Somebody just said "everyone is entitled to their opinions", someone said to me years ago that stuck "wouldn't the world be a very boring place if we thought the same and dressed the same?"

That would be great hollygolightly. I had thought about a pin or hair comb instead of the veil, as my heart is really set on the shrug! I do feel that it might be too much for me - I believe in the "before you leave the house take off the last accessory you put on" rule ! Thanks again
