Button holes are they necessary?

Postby BluefishJD » Fri Jan 27, 2012 12:40 pm

:bluewave all missies and Grooms2be - looking for some advice - something I have overlooked as such is buttonholes - not that i didn't know about them but not something i thought of as important as we are doing our flowers & church decorations ourselves just not something that came into my head now although we are doing our own flowers we will be heading to a local florist the week before to get brides' bouquet and also a bouquet for the bridesmaid ordered up for the day - I have checked and they said we can just call in the week before and order the bouquet but now that i have started looking at suits i just wonder do i need button holes or can i get away with out them and if i do decide to go with them can i just ask the florist that is doing my B2B's bouquet to do up some buttonholes as well? There would only be 3 needed as it is just me and my best man and I have decided to get my dad (only father figure as B2B's father has passed) suited out but he is not directly part of the bridal party - any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Hey there BluefishJD, buttonholes, just like everything weddingy apart from the witnesses and solemniser are optional. But, are they usual? yes, I have never had a couple who did not want buttonholes of some sort or other. They are not expensive, and if you're not into flowers, your florist would be able to make them out of greenery, herbs, wire, there are plenty of things we can use. The cheapest flower option would be carnations, the most popular, roses. Your florist will be able to guide you, but HTH.

Thanks Giselle - appreciate the advice having looked at a couple of google suit images I do think they - the buttonholes - do finish off the "look" nicely - will bring it up with the local florist when we go in to talk about the bouquet - again many thanks for your input it's helped in my decision greatly
Cheers

I wasn't going to bother with them at all, never notice them and just couldn't be bothered, but h2b siad he wanted them. It'll only be around €15 anyway.

Apologies for hijacking BluefishJD!, But i was wondering then on what everyone has said, is it possible to go into a florist and get three or 4 button holes made with just white carnations or something as a stand alone purchase?
Myself, my mother and a family friend are planning to do the bouquets and the church flowers, having done similar before but neither of us have made button holes. So it'd be great to just go into a florist and buy 4 if i could!

A whiletogo, yes, any florist should be happy to make these for you, I can't see any reason why not.

Thanks again giselle! and no problem awhiletogo like you I'd be hoping for the same - as we are organizing our own main Flowers (church decoration) that it would be ok just to go in and get the buttonholes as a one off buy along with the two bouquets we require.

If you didnt want a button hole you could go with a nice hankie in top left pocket of jacket a nice colour to match bridemaid colour or match flower colour would be nice. Would take the plain look from the suit.
