I asked my FIL 2b alright. Sent him a message a few days before asking to meet up cause I wanted to ask him something. Got a text that evening and met him the next day in a pub near him. Had a drink with him and got his blessings so was delighted. Later found out that my FIL 2 b cant text and the text was sent by my MIL 2b so she knew all bout it too. I had made an excuse about working late to my w2b when I was meeting the FIL, then on way home I was thinking "oh god she will smell the drink off me" so stopped at shop and ate a whole packet of chewing gum before getting home, she didnt notice though thanks god. In the end she was really happy I asked her father and he was very touched I went to him first too, its each to thier own though I guess.

My h2b rang my dad 2 days before he proposed - my dad was in work and couldn't talk and just said "well what do you want me to say" lol

He rang back later while H2B was in the changing rooms in Dunnes and said he was delighted and thanks for doing it the right way round and all - luckily I was outside lol.

My dad was really happy he asked in advance (especially since I'm his fave - look more like his family than the rest of my siblings), still goes on about it a year and a half later!

My fiancé asked both my parents... My parents are separated and my mum sort of raised the kids all alone so I'm glad he asked her too

Mine asked my Dad and then took me away for the weekend. Dad didn't say anything to mum as she is a bit of a foghorn and gets really excited and does the whole "wait till I tell you but you can't tell anyone I told you" thing. She's useless at holding in information and is a terrible liar so if anyone asked her was something up she'd say "oh well I'm sworn to secrecy all will be revealed" god love her at least you know she'll never lie to you!! Anyway Dad got in trouble for not telling her but she's well over it now.

My Bride 2 be's father died before she was born so I had no FIL to contend with however being the good Irish lad I am out of respect (not really tradition as she is from a different country) I wrote a letter of my intentions and gave it to her mother (her mother only speaks broken english and I broken Polish so letter was easier and quicker) - so I had a friend help me translate my words and gave her the translated letter - it was quite rushed as we were on holidays and staying with her mum and the only time I was on my own with her mum was when my fiance headed to the shop or took a shower and I wanted the proposal to be a surprise so i gave her the letter whilst my soon to be other half was in the shower and she (her mum) started! (talking) not knowing exactly what she said I smiled and nodded and very aware that I heard the shower had stopped in the background and didn't want to be rude by cutting her off but tried to "mime" 'it's a surprise' at the end she smiled so i took it that it was all good - after the proposal her mum said that she was very taken with my gesture, wouldn't let anyone else see the letter and said it was between me and her and she knew I was a good one!:)
