Guess I'm taking the plunge!

Postby Groom2Be » Fri Nov 20, 2009 11:49 pm

Hi, I'm not sure where to begin! I'm actually physcially shaking with nerves and excitement as I write this.

I'm planning on proposing to my girlfriend of 5 years in the next few weeks and nobody has a clue - just me and the jeweller! Hopefully she doesn't suspect a thing. :D

I'm going to do my best to put together a romantic proposal because I really want it to be a moment that we'll both never forget! :smitten

Wish me luck, I'll need it! If I'm up to it and if anyone is interested, I'll come back on here and let you know how I'm getting on.

(feels very strange actually posting this here, but I had to get it off my chest!!)

Thanks for the replies ladies, it's encouraging to know that I have all your support behind me!
I have to admit, I'm more nervous about the whole proposal thing than I thought I would be. Absolutely no doubts about what I'm doing but I just want it all to go smoothly because I only get one chance to do it right.

I've decided to take her away somewhere on a suprise trip to pop the question..... more later, gotta run!

I'm collecting the ring tomorrow! :D I got the call this afternoon from the jeweller letting me know that it's ready. I got one custom made based on a design that I know she likes. I hope it turns out as exptected!

Our anniversary date is coming up early next month so that is when I'm planning on popping the question. Just need to formulate a plan first! :smitten

So far I don't think she has a clue what's happening, we've obviously talked about marriage etc but don't think she is expecting any proposals until next year or the year after so hopefully will catch her totally off guard!

More updates soon...

Hi again,

Well I collected the ring yesterday and it's pretty much exactly as i expected and looks lovely. I had to sneak in one of her rings to get the size right so that was a high risk job I can tell you!! I think I got away with it. I've never spent so much time watching her fingers to see what rings she wears and on what fingers. Luckily, the jeweller told me that he would be able to adjust the size for her if doesn't fit perfectly (obviously after we're engaged and assuming she says yes of course!! )

So now I have it well hidden and I'm not going to say where!

Now if I could get some opinions here please! What is the story with asking the bride's father for permission to marry his daughter? Is this tradition dying out or is it very much the done thing nowadays? I think it's an honourable thing to do personally and it really shows respect, but I don't want to make a total tool out of myself. I think I'd be more nervous asking her dad than her!!

Any female opinions on this? Are there any guys on here at all? The male perspective will also be very helpful.

@cdor09 : I'm not too sure yet but I'll be making the effort to be as rosemantic as possible. I'll be sure to tell ye here once I've figured it all out.

I'm getting excited now, can't believe I actually have the ring. Something very real about the whole thing and at the same time, something very sureal if that makes any sense!! :bounce

Till next time,

hey groom2be

my h2b asked my dad and he really liked it. My parents got an extra buzz out of the whole thing cause they knew and I didn't.
Mam's can be useful if you're planning on going away (without her knowledge!) My h2b brought me on a mystery weekend to Paris, was really romantic.

My h2b asked my dad as well... it may be a dying tradition, but I think it definitely shows an important level of respect for your wife-to-be and her family. H2B said it was fairly nerve wracking, but it was important to him (not to mention myself and my dad)... I'd say go for it. And good luck! :happywave

I think it depends on the family. If your girlfriend is close to her family and her dad then why not ask him. They will probably appreciate it. You know yourself if they are the kind of family that would.

aww groom2b, thats so cute! :D

i think if you want to ask then ask,my h2b didnt ask my dad as i said i never wanted that done for me, but you know your girlfriend and you know what she wants. like my sil2b wants it so much for her dad to be asked, and her boyfriend knows this(they have been going out for bout 6 yrs, and i know that the both wanna get married so its only a matter of time )
