Diet and skin

Postby MinnieMiss » Sun Oct 16, 2011 11:58 pm

I've noticed that the more I endeavour to lose weight the more I consume products containing aspartame and caffeine. These additives definitely have a detrimental effect on my skin. I get a sort of rash like breakout with all sorts of blemishes. Has anyone else noticed this? My skin has always been sensitive to what I eat... A bag of crisps or chips will always lead to little pimples. Coffee has a similar effect.

I don't want to have bad skin on my wedding day, which is december 2012. I would rather weigh what I do now and have perfect skin. Is anyone following a "clean" diet rather than low cal, low sugar, low fat etc.

I don't "diet" as such ,but I do have some medical issues which means that I follow a fairly 'clean' diet, free from salt, preservatives, colourings, etc. It has to be balanced in fats. carbohydrates and protein though, to make sure I am getting enough vitamins and minerals. I never eat ready meals (I dislike them anyway), red meat, any processed food, including any frozen foods like pizza, burgers or chicken kiev or any breaded chicken. I don't drink tea, coffee, soft drinks, eat crisps or any tinned goods. The exceptions to that are tinned sweetcorn, coconut milk, chopped tomatoes. The only frozen food I buy are vegetables just to have in the freezer in case of an emergency. I eat fresh fruit, vegetables, dried fruit, nuts, prepare all my meat from cuts of chicken, turkey or pork, (duck, goose or rabbit sometimes), make my own sauces from tomatoes and herbs and spices, coconut milk, chickpeas, etc. I eat pasta, cous cous, potatoes and rice as carbohydrate and a small amount of youghurt and butter, but no cheese. I make my own bread and pasta quite often as well. The only place I tend to fall down a bit is chocolate and cake :yeah I do like those.

I do eat a lot, and a restrictive diet is a lot of hassle. I do really notice the difference in my health when I eat correctly and when I don't, but a lot of the time it is difficult to control when you are not in your own home. Mine is quite a severe eating plan, but I need to do it. I would suggest that you cut all caffeine from your diet, as that really helps a lot. Aspartame makes my arthritis worse, so I avoid that completely when I can, but it isn't great for a healthy person either. I would just suggest making everything yourself from basic fresh foods, so you can keep an eye on what goes into it. You don't realise the about of salt and sugars that are in processed foods and especially cereals until you really look at the packaging. It is tough going, but you will really notice the difference within a few weeks. Your skin, hair and nails feel and look fantastic and you will have a lot more energy. The downside is the preparation involved. Make enough dinner for 2 nights, so you won't have to cook twice. Freeze sauces and bread for later, and make sure you always have dried nuts or fruit to snack on when you are feeling peckish, to avoid reaching for a sugary snack instead.

I'm so busy and on the go constantly that I need a sugar boost to be able to juggle a full time job, coaching 5 nights a week, training myself 3 times a week and going to college on a sat. I have given up coffee the past week. It's been a struggle.

Hi MM,

how much of a sugar hit do you take daily? With december not so far off, I would be focusing on high protein eating. typically have fish/tuna/salmon/chicken/turkey with lots of roasted veg on your plate in the evenings. No spuds/chrisps/chips etc. After your wedding you can review your eating. The clean eating should look after your complexion. Make sure you drink at least 2 litres of water a day to keep your skin hydrated. Hope this info helps. Best of luck for december. Michael.

great advice michael! Can i also recommend aloe vera juice> it is amazing. I started taking it for ibs but is excellent for your digestive system and your skin. my friend developed adult acne- started taking a shot of aloe vera juice twice daily- cleared her skin right up.
i am so not an alternative therapy person but this stuff is awesome.

Well dieting always do directly effect on skin. If you want skin free from pimples, you should drink plenty of water as much as possible, eat fresh fruits, green vegetables, nuts and daily practice of yoga will help you a lot to have glow skin.
