The Boycott Mauritius Bandwagon

The Boycott Mauritius Bandwagon

Postby Spice Of Life » Tue Jul 17, 2012 3:13 pm

Just as I'm trying to be positive on another thread, I come across this notion shared by somebody on Facebook.

I mean WTF like?

Really terrible that Michaela lost her life. Awful on her hubby and her friends and family. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

Whether those two guys did it or not, I don't know - and neither does the media. Basic fact is that there wasn't evidence to say beyond a reasonable doubt that they did actually do it. Then there are the claims that confessions were beaten out of them. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

So it's not a clear cut case. But yet, many people are quick to jump on the bandwagon to boycott an entire country. Why? The entire country didn't murder her. Some sick and twisted individual(s) did. There's a major difference. Hopefully they'll be caught and face full justice.

I totally get the fear of travelling to Mauritius. But how is it really much different from Ireland or any other country in fact? Reality is that there is plenty of violence and murder in practically every country. It's just that when something gets highlighted like this, so many of us are very quick to jump on the bandwagon.

Thoughts?

My initial thought is it's bloody ridiculous to boycott a country HOWEVER I think the difference between being fearful of travelling there now and travelling say to Ireland from abroad is definitely the justice system. Not the country, not the people, their system would make me fearful. God forbid if anything like that happened to any of us we would at least want to know that law was on our side and we could have some kind if faith in the police

I actually stayed in Legends a few years ago. Never felt safer in a hotel than there and I love travelling and have stayed in a lot of hotels/ hostels. I agree with Dollydu that it is more to do with the justice system but yeah, some people seem to be just jumping on the bandwagon. Plenty of people get murdered in NYC for example and there are direct flights from Dublin Airport to there several times a day. The police in Mauritius certainly seem to have made a complete shambles of the case and my heart goes out to the two families, truly, but boycotting a country does not seem to me to be the right way to show solidarity with them.
first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes.

Good points about the justice system. Then again, it's not like ours is perfect either.
Really feel for the families affected :(

now i might get linched when i say this but i for 1 will and would bycott it! ok i understand there is trouble in every country but for me its the fact that if something does happen ya you would hope that the police will act in favor of the victim ! so what im trying to say is if i ever become a victim in any country i would like to have faith in getting justice !

I think the police in this case make a total bollox of the situation. It's easy of course for me to say this. I wasn't there, just making assumptions.

I have been having issues with this and have got some negative comments from friends but I wouldn't boycott Mauritius myself to be honest! Yes it is terrible what has happened and what the families have been through but we are not in a position to judge! The guards here have made a mess of cases and jumped too quick but we promote tourism to our lovely country... Where people are murdered, raped and seriously assaulted every day! I don't agree with it and personally I think if it was you or I who was murdered, there wouldn't be a word about us today! It's high profile and people are trying to jump on the bandwagon! 90% of them probably had no intentions of ever visiting the country anyway! I feel for the normal people of Mauritius who depend on tourism to survive! It's not their fault that they have a corrupt goverenment, just like us!

I just saw this on facebook now and was shocked at some of the comments etc, this really brings out the extremists. My heart goes out to the Harte and McCreavy families but I think it's unrealistic to think that a country will be boycotted as said previously if that was the case there would be many many countries that have boycotted Ireland because of murders of people over here.
My problem with luxury places like Mauritius, Dominican Rep etc is that the locals are mostly working for nothing and its the big companies that are making all the money. I have no problem with other people going on hols there (as many of my friends and family have) I just personally don't feel that I could go.
