Tip for choosing photographer

Postby Jackyl » Thu Dec 29, 2011 11:52 pm

I'm just starting to look at booking a photographer and find there is a huge choice out there :dizzy

I thought I would share this interesting question I came across to ask the photographer which should narrow the field somewhat, are they registered with the Irish Professional Photographers Association ?? This would guarantee that they are fully qualified, insured and tax compliant.

Any other tips or pointers welcome :)

Hi Jackyl,

Whereas I think this is indeed an excellent question and would definitely ensure that you get a qualified, insured and tax compliant photographer it would also exclude many great photographers, such as Pat Baker, Mark Nixon, Philip Leonard, Paul Kelly all of whom are excellent at their job, have years of experience under their belts and, I'm sure, are qualified, insured and tax compliant.

I've long felt that the two most important things to consider when selecting a photographer for your day are:
1) Their quality and style of photography and
2) How you get on with your photographer - you will be with him/her for most of your day so if you don't get on well it will put an unnecessary strain on your day.

I would contend that the best way to select a photographer is to look through their work online, send out inquiries and then pick a shortlist to meet with to discuss their work and your requirements. At the meeting you can ask about their insurance, qualifications and, if necessary, their tax compliance. You can also look for testimonials/recommendations either from the photographer or online on wedding sites such as this.

Hope this helps.

The main thing for me was to pick someone that me and my hubby were comfortable with - we met with three photographers that were equally as good but we just gelled with the one we chose the best and the pictures turned out amazing probably cause we were relaxed with him
