We got a Christmas card from our venue today! They all signed it... it was kind of sweet!

In other news... that sounds like a great deal, DIY - good job!

Can you haggle with the hotel once you've paid your deposit?
I kind of thought that once you paid the deposit you were saying ok to their terms and conditions etc? We paid our deposit at the end of November and the more I read of this thread the more I wish I had read it before we'd paid a deposit. I would of liked to try haggle, but I feel that since they have my deposit they'll just tell me where to go as they know I'm going to go with them.
Should I try haggle any way?

I'm there with you all on the scary thing.
I was told by a hotel that when booking your tasting meal try organise it on the same night as another wedding and to try to match your meal choices to the wedding meal choices so that your getting your tasting from the main wedding and therefore getting a truer idea of what your own wedding meal will be like as the hotel will be catering for both you and the wedding at the same time........................... does this make sence???

yeah JHK that makes sence i suppose they mean its easy to do a nice meal for the few of ye going for a tasting and they just want to show u that they can still do a nice meal when they're catering for a big group like a wedding!!

We have booked the hotel and paid a deposit but haven't really gone through prices yet.

I know we are getting free chair covers, free mulled wine reception with mince pies and tea and coffee for all the guests on arrival - wedding is New Years Eve so will be nice and festive, champagne for bridal party, red carpet, table arrangement on every table and a couple of flower arrangements, cake stand, personalised menus - you provide them with photo and they use in menus, bridal suite for bride and groom, dinner voucher for first anniversary.

They have given us sample menu for 45 a person which is vol au vent to start, followed by soup, followed by main course of beef or seabass, then a melody of desserts. This doesn't include wine or afters food but I don't think it's too bad.
