DJ only for reception ?? Help !

Postby lady-in-waiting » Mon Jul 18, 2011 6:37 pm

:happywave Hi there !
I am just wondering if any Misses deceided to have a DJ only at their wedding?
Its just that I am on such a tight budget that I dont know if I can afford a band.
The band I like have given me a reasonable price but am finding it hard to swallow such a large expense when we are trying to buy a house, fund a honeymoon, pay for the wedding etc...
A band & a DJ is a months mortgage !! :crazy

Would anyone mind/notice if we did DJ only from 10pm to 2am ?
The H2B is not favourable to this, as everyone he knows has always had a Band & DJ !!

Help !!

Heya, my sister had a Dj only for her reception and i must say it was the best wedding i ever been to!! :) The Dj played all weddingy get-up-and-dance songs like siege of ennis and all them!! :) Even had an irish dancing dance off between boys and girls!!! :)
Just make sure the DJ is good and it should be good!! :)
Cant wait to marry the greatest person who ive ever met, who has been there for me through some tough times and who will always be by my side. :)

I was at a wedding a few months back and they had a dj for the whole night and he was excellent he had the whole dance floor packed and it worked perfect. I agree with you the cost of bands is crazy and when you look at as a months mortgage and sometimes the bands are charging more than a months mortgage its very hard to swallow.

We are only having a dj too for the night part, I don't think people notice once there is good music on. We have a trad band for our drinks reception so thought it would be over-kill to have two bands. I was at a wedding that had a dj before too, and we were dancing all night ...

I would never jump on and say "go dj only" because were all made individually and like different things so what may be good for some might not be good for others and this forum has had a few discussions around this topic and this seems to be the general consensus. One thing that is a definite is that the band/dj combination while it is a handy hassle free and sometimes cheaper option - is not half as good as having somebody with enthusiasm and a fresh approach. The only reason bands offer this is simply to remain competitive and it is simply a chore more than a service.

Entertainment is about understanding your guests, homing in their likes and dislikes and what might be best for them from an entertainment perspective. Age, time of year, venue, location, start time and finish time all play an important part in the night because people don't always jump up straight away to start dancing and sometimes guests can be a wilder where others might need some encouragement to get dancing.

Like everything - research is key and if you know your guests you'll instinctively know how to entertain them and i've said it before - part of being a great dj is knowing your limitations when accepting work. If I'm in any doubts along the way about whether a band is the better option i'll always advise because it's a very important event.

Hope this helps,

Its a relief to hear of other people doing this!
So far we only have DJ booked but I know they will be fab. Plus I have a singer for the drinks reception and céilí dancers as well so there will be plenty of entertainment. Fingers crossed it all goes well.

Hi,
Thanks for the kind words and thoughts ladies ! :clapper
So I have asked quite a few people at work and friends as well. They have all echoed your thoughts.
Essentially they have all said that a Band is great but only if you really want one yourself. As a guest, no-one really minds so long as the music is good and craic is mighty !
All I have to do now is convince the H2B ! A nice steak dinner with plenty of potatoes should help !( he's a country boy !)

Its a relief to hear that we are not the only ones considering having a dj only . our hotel is giving us a dj for hour and half and we are thinking of getting him to play for the night and pay him for the extra time

Hey hun im another one only having a Dj! The prices of bands Are unreal especially in a recession. You could afford a honeymoon for the price of a band almost! Totally unjustifiable and you are definitely not the only one doing it. If you wanted to get an entertainer in as a breaker seeing h2b wants something extra you can get all kinds of entertainment for around 300 starting prices . Just google wedding entertainment Ireland and stuff should come up. X
