Radisson Blu Athlone

Postby fromOHtoH » Sat Jun 04, 2011 8:08 pm

Hi Ladies
As some of ye may know from my previous post were having our wedding reception in Athlone. We visited a few places in the last few days and the Radisson came out on top for most things but Im a bit worried about the decor of the wedding reception room. It looks really plain, now, it was set up for a conference so we couldnt really see what it would be like for a wedding.

Has anyone been here for a wedding? Ive seen pictures but Id like to get some feedback from anyone who has been there for a wedding.

Thanks :)

Hi, I am getting married there too next year. The room is fantastic set up. We are getting candles in the windows and the flowers. We were worried with some reviews but they have got new staff managers and they are excellent

I was never at a wedding there but I stayed there for my friend's hen. In the morning, after the first night, I was eating breakfast there (on my own because I had got a call to say that my dad was dying, quickly, so I was up to make my way there) but about 5 mins later, my mother called to say that he had died. Anyway, they were so good to me. H2b was coming up from Dublin to pick me up so they put out a full cooked breakfast for him that they let me take with me, plate, knife, fork and everything. And a few days later I kept getting missed calls off a strange number. It turns out it was the manager of the Radisson just ringing to see how I was, that she had been thinkng of me. I have never known any hotel to be as nice as that. The woman was lovely and the rooms were nice and everything. It's my only experience of the place but it left a good impression on me and I'm sure that they would do anything to keep you happy there and make sure you had a great wedding day.

Oh Brideog thanks so much for your post. What a horrible time for you but how good of them to look after you so well.
The Radisson was actually the first hotel we went to see and from the start the lady we dealt with was so nice to us. We went to see a few others but we kept comparing the people in the hotels to her and they couldnt compare. Theyve given us a fantastic deal and we actually decided today that we will be having our wedding there. Hoping to have contracts sorted by the weekend :)
Only 4 more days until your big day! Ive read youre previous posts and it seems like youve had such a tough time of it with FIL's. I hope you have a fabulously mignificent day, you thoroughly deserve it :)

Thanks, you're very good! I'm delighted you got such a great deal with them! I'd say go for it, at the end of the day, it is the people who make the wedding and with staff like that you're on to a winner I'd say! ;)

Marydunning - I dont know how i missed your post when i was online last night - sorry!. I havent seen the room set up, only photographs and was having a few worries about how it would look. Im so glad to see that youve seen it, its a relief to hear from someone who doesnt work there that it looks good :clapper :clapper :clapper Weve to pay our deposit this week and then its official :) :) :)
Im so excited - we havent told anyone yet that were getting married, we want to have the main stuff booked and the ring bought and then we'll announce it. That way we got to do the big stuff without anyone else forcing their opinions on us. Im so excited today tho that im afraid ill let the cat out of the bag :bounce :bounce :bounce

Re: Radisson Blu Athlone

I am a bride to be and i am organising my wedding in Ireland from London. I went to Athlone last week to look at venues and the Radisson also came out on top of our list. We are now in the process of making our final decision and part of that is getting feedback about the venue. I love the location, staff, and ballroom. I have not seen it set up but hope to when i return there in three weeks time (and i will let you know what i think). I have heard from a friend who recently starting working there that they pull out all the stops on the day of a wedding and that the ball room looks fantastic and that the views at night are amazing with the castle and church light up across the water.

My only hesitation so far with the Radisson is that i am finding it hard to find feedback re weddings there. I am from the local area and it is not one of the hotels that people in my area use. I am aware that it is under new management and that their new sales person Tanya is trying to develop its reputation for weddings. I am conscious that it is always easy to get negative feedback about venues as people are often more willing to criticise than compliment - i have heard some negative feedback about their food and service on the day of a wedding and this is causing us to quetion the radisson as our wedding venue.... I have also read some really positive reviews re wedding however the numbers were around the 120 mark. My numbers will be in the 300 mark and i know that it is harder to get right in terms of speed. I have eaten in the main bar area twice and both times the food was good.

So i guess my question is has anyone been to a wedding, had their own wedding in the radisson and what was the food and service like? Also how many people were they catering for on the day.

Thanks in advance

Hi, I booked there too. Also my friend had her wedding there and she could not recommend it more. Tanya and the team are fantastic, she sent me some pics of the ballroom and it's amazing. I was the same as u I was not with bad reports but u think there are great improvements. Let me know u get on. Remember u are dealing with a team and u need to be comfortable with that.

Thanks Mooseyd! What date have you picked next year and how many guests are you having?

We are 80% decided on booking the Radisson and will be going back in 3 weeks to pay the deposit. We are hoping for August/September 2012.

Sept 7th 20121 we might have 240. i think the room is certainly big enough to hold 300 and can accommodate 100 as they can split the room.

we went to the bay and i felt it was a bit of a wedding factory- they did not ask us what we wanted only what they do!!!! Glasson - i loved but out of our price bracket and the rooms for guests were expensive.

i like the radisson as the rooms are reasonable and in a good location for guests staying over. What date are you thinking?

We are looking at September too either the 21st / 28th we have provisionally held both.

We looked at all the other venues in the area too but some of them i thought were a little dated, some had the wow factor but were a little out of town, over priced and would be expensive for guests to stay.

The radisson has it all for me - central location, good views, nice size hotel no one will get lost!, friendly staff, good sized ballroom i think it will definitely hold 300 comfortably and as you said affordable room rates.

Have you booked your band, photographer etc?
