Everyone has their own priorities for their big day. For some it will be the church music, others the flowers.
For us our priorities were, music, food and photos.
For us the band is huge - we wanted great music from a live band that would be always remembered from our big day. We want people to remember being up dancing all night and having great craic.

Decisions, Decisions , Decisions..... I would love to have one, but the MAX we could pay is €1000, and any good band that i have seen so far cost way above that.
When your getting married on a budget, and something like that can make such a huge saving, it's hard not to really consider it. Spoke to a few friends and have had mixed reactions from them. One girl said she was at a wedding with just a DJ and it was great, until he basically stated replaying all the songs again.... That would be a nightmare!!
We spoke about it briefly again last night, and it will be basically a great band and no HM, or a good DJ and good HM. I thought this wedding planning stuff was meant to be fun! :(

Thanks for all your thoughts and comments. It's great to be able to sound these things out with people in a similar position. Big Hugs to ayou all :hug3

That's really down to an inexperienced DJ...

I have played up to 6hrs at wedding and do not repeat songs.. as a rule..

Choose your DJ carefully as 5 hrs can be a really long time with a crap DJ (Excuse the language)

lol paul you are so right about choosing the dj carefully, we are very happy with ours as i get to choose lots of my fave songs and put it onto their list before the big day, lol i hope he doesnt think ive taken over the playlist and gone all bridezilla   , ive chosen 4 hrs of music , i LOVE music its so important to me and the family too and i think with a dj you can get a good mix of old and new choons..lol..i would have loved a band too but the cost factor was too high but think we did well in our choice of dj...

Paul you are so right, but it woudl be a fear that would be with me.
After speaking with friends and family i am still no closer in making a decision. everyone is very 50 / 50 when i mention the topic.
Going to be up to a coin toss i think!!! LOL

We had both band and DJ and they were great - i don't regret having both

Music was very important to me and i was willing to pay extra for it

For me the most important things were the food, the music and the photos and that is what i spent the most money on

ohh. i didn't' think of that, the break between band and DJ. Thats really good to know MrsTwillbe.

Most DJs set up WITH THE BAND so there's NO hand-over time between the band and DJ these days dazcaz. I've only seen the old "clear the band then the DJ sets up" maybe twice in 5 years!

:)

Your guests should be the ultimate decider on what your entertainement should be on the night.
Every great DJ knows exactly how good they can be and when live entertainment would be the better option. DJ's can work very well with younger guests as they relate better to a good mixture of music and then a older or mixed crowd can react better to a band because its a live entertainment performance, where a dj cant match this so you really have to try and look at your guest list.

I remember working at a wedding last december where the band was booking and I followed afterwards and I just remember sitting back thinking it wasa great call on the couples part if getting both because I dont think I could have matched the energy of the particular live act - goodfellas who it was on the night. Bands do cost a bit of money, a bit more than a dj but if you get the right one its the best investment in your night that you can possibly make.

And the golden rule for everyone - go and see your act, discuss your music and what your particular provider will be bring for you and you'll have your level of expectation from this. All events are different but no by a mile so by getting out there you will have a better idea of what to expect from your supplier and most djs so setup with or at least an hour before the band starts - this is a given and if your's didn't - he's not a pro!
