wedding ring to suit engagement ring??

Postby annie » Sun Aug 23, 2009 12:31 am

hello,
ive a bit of a dilema...
my engagement ring has a 'twist' with two diamonds in the middle..im not great with jewellery terminology but thats the best way I can describe it!! my h2b chose it and surprised me on hols...i love the ring, really suits me. I was at a wedding fayre recently and told that I would more than likely have to get a wedding band specially made to suit the shape of the ring..has anyone any experience of this? I would always have liked a 'traditional' wedding band as I have my late nana's to use but there would be a gap between it and the engagement ring where the twist is..two gaps in fact! Is this such a bad thing? or is it best to get one made? I just have this feeling that if I get one made to suit, it wont even look like a wedding ring!! does anyone know of any good jewellers in cork/kerry region which can make rings to suit??
loads of questions I know as usual!!
thanks for any advice..

Hi annie,

I'm in the same boat actually! I love my engagement ring to bits - it's got a kind of twist (just one diamond though!) plus two little diamonds on the side (facing up and down my finger, if that makes sense). I talked to a fairly unhelpful jeweller and explained that I didn't want the wedding band to cover up the little diamonds, so what could I do? He basically said "tough luck".

So my new idea, which I've heard from some other people, is to get a wedding band that I'm madly in love with but is also slightly "untraditional", and wear my engagement ring on my right hand instead. Best of both worlds! If you wanted to go that route, then you'd be able to wear your nana's ring (which I think is a lovely idea) and keep wearing your engagement ring too.

Hope that helps! :happywave

Hi there! :happywave I've had the same problem and a while back Kefjo advised me to do what she's doing!
I think i'll go that route and just wear my engagement ring on my right hand. Otherwise i might get h2b to buy me a bridal suite, with a new engagement ring and wedding ring in a set. This way i'll have my wedding ring looking perfect, next to a normal looking engagement ring but i'll still keep my original one on my right hand. Hope you get what i'm saying, i'm rambling on a bit!

annie thinks its a lovely idea that you wanna wear your nan's ring, but you said
but there would be a gap between it and the engagement ring where the twist is..two gaps in fact! Is this such a bad thing? or is it best to get one made?
it really depends on how you feel bout the gap - i personally wouldnt think it was that bad but you will be wearing the rings. i would have an unusual shape ring too but when i picked it out i tried on a wedding band and maternity ring with it. i done this on advice of the jewellers and even though they all have an unusual shape they all fitted into eachother nicely. my wedding band would have to have a bend in it and so would the maternity ring. the jewellers had these rings in the shop so it wasnt an issue so sorry i cant help bout getting it made.

What's the difference between an eternity ring and a maternity ring? Is it just a different meaning behind it? :?

if the gap is really bothering you, you should go into a diamond dealer if you want a diamond band and get your ring made. My DH got my engagement ring made so I went back to the same guy as i didn't know what type of band to go for and he came up with a design for me. I love my rings.so maybe this is an option to look at. You could ask the priest to bless you nana's ring again and you could wear that on your ring hand.. Just an idea then if you had a little girl of your own you could pass the ring onto her when she gets married :)

It's totally up to you whether the gap is bad - maybe try wearing the two together for a while (in private!) and see what you think. If you don't like it but really want to wear your nana's ring, you could have a very slim ring made to go between the two rings.

Personally, I always love the idea of two rings that are meant to be together so my wedding ring will be in a V shape to match my engagement ring. How would it not look like a wedding ring if you got one made to suit?
We got ours made by Diamant who have their jeweller in Antwerp so it was good value and I believe they have offices in Cork as well so maybe you could check them out? http://www.diamant.ie

Hi There,
My sis didn't like having a gap but equally didn't want to have a shaped wedding band as she prefers the idea of a straight band if she ever stops wearing her engagement ring. She got a filler ring made which is a very thin ring that fits to your engagement ring on one side and have a flat edge on the other so you can have a regular straight band.

It looks lovely and she is still really happy with it two years on. It did confuse the priest on the day though as she forgot to take if out of the ring box and the poor priest was left with 3 rings to bless...

I think I will go with straight band as I like the gap personally...

Best of luck with whatever you decide... :happywave
