Advice please - marriage registration
Re: Advice please - marriage registration
Neither my h2b or myself were born here, although we both hold Irish citizenship. This means that we both need apostille stamps on our birth certificates, and by the looks of it, he'll have an easier time getting his than I will. I was born in America, so I have to apply for my birth certificate(cost:$15). Then I have to send the Vital Records office a self addressed envelope addressed to the Secretary of State for Oklahoma along with another one so they can send the apostille stamped certificate back. Oh, and the apostille stamp from the Secretary of State will cost me $25.
Who said getting married was straightforward?

You need your baptismal cert for that, and I have no clue where mine is! Add to that the fact that h2b isn't Catholic, and it's more hassle than it's worth!

Re: Advice please - marriage registration
and I think that is the word of the day "Nuisance" in relation to all the paperwork hoops ya have to jump through! Like you NineNails my B2B is not from Ireland either - she's from Poland. We were there for August thinking we'd get all the necessary bits but didn't know about the 6 month thing so all we came home with was a birth cert - which we then had to send back to poland to the polish office of foreign affairs to get the Apostille Seal!! Whilst we were there we had to meet with the priest basically talk nice to him (and slip him more money) so as my future MIL can go back this month to get all the relevant certs and forms so it's within the 6 month period!! I tell ya nuisance is not the word! And to add to this the priest in poland had never even heard of a letter of freedom so hopefully we explained it correctly to him and get what is necessary because if not and our priest tells us we need something different I don't know what i'l do

I've no idea what I have to do! Does anyone have any idea what has to be done when a country still has the long authentication and legalization process?

Re: Advice please - marriage registration
total pain so it is!! and we too had lots of
- We were over in my B2B homeland, Poland, for August and used our time there to get her paperwork sorted, meet with priest etc etc - went to official "Civil" office to get new Birth Cert - explained our situation - marriage outside of Poland
was convinced we got all we needed and enjoyed the rest of our holidays came back to Ireland knowing we had booked for Registering our Marriage for late September so gave them a call and low and below the "Stamps" and things that were on the Birth Cert wasn't what they wanted..we were Now for your own situation I wonder could you look up the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the equivalent also I did a quick search and found this http://www.alscanada.ca/authentication_apostille.html hopefully it will help or at least be a good starting point!! Best of luck with it

Re: Advice please - marriage registration
That site made me panic even more when I saw it this morning as I saw the cost related to it. A few deep breaths and a few well placed phone call and I think I have figured it out without having to pay 150$ to get it authenticated. Seems that I can get my long form birth certificate for a small fee and then go to the Department of Foreign Affairs and get it authenticated for free. A good thing I happen to live in the capital as it is much faster if you do it in person.
Thanks soooo much for taking the time to send me that site.
It's good to know I am not the only one jumping through all the hoops.

Re: Advice please - marriage registration
thats great glad you are able to get it sorted - when i went on to that site first I did think the cost was a bit OTT - but I think this is because it's more of a business/company rather than a branch of the government/foregin affairs but just thought it might be a good stepping stone again hope all goes ok with it and you get it sorted!- BluefishJD

Re: Advice please - marriage registration
Course run mainly from fri evenings for 2 hours and all day sat and the cost is €150 but varies in different locations so could be more or less than 150.
The course is for you both and it's just preparing you for marriage and you meet other couples who getting married also and you get lectures etc. I don't know what else is involved as I'm doing mine next January!! After completing the course you will get a certificate and you give that to your priest then. You have to do a pre marriage course so accordsos the main course that is recognised by all priests.
Hope this helps hun

Re: Advice please - marriage registration
The pre-marriage course is only if you are getting married in the Catholic church. You don't need it for a civil ceremony. As your H2B is divorced I'm guessing you are not marrying in Catholic church. (unless is has a church annulment). If you are getting married in a Protestant church there may be some sort of equivalent to the pre-marriage course, (ask your minister) but it definitely is not the Accord one. Hope that helps.
