Advice please - marriage registration

Postby Lorr01 » Fri Oct 14, 2011 4:21 pm

Hello I hope Someone can help me. We are getting married in November 2012.
We are going to see our priest in jan 2012 for chat for the 1st time

I have booked our pre marriage course for end jan 2012 to get it done and over with.

Can I also book our wedding registration with the local registrar to get that out of the way also or is end Jan 2012 to early when the wedding not till nov 2012.??
Any help I would appreciate!

Do I have to get any documents from the priest to bring with me to registrar the marriage as we have the normal checklist requirements ready.?? (passports utility bills birth Certs etc)

Thanks very much

Never to early in my opinion. The only time you need to worry about when registering the marriage is to make sure you do it at least three months in advance of the wedding date. So go ahead and make the appointment. Once the marriage has been registered you then have six months from the date of marriage to get married. I know that sounds odd and you're probably saying well I plan to get married that day but if something happens lets say you have to put it back for whatever reason you have six months to play around with. Also you don't need anything from the Priest for the State Registration.

Happy planning!

Hi again :D - I'm not following you I swear   I had this typed before i seen your name

Hi from our experience No you don't need anything from your priest to register your marriage, well only his name and address (or church he works out of) you can get this info from this link http://www.groireland.ie/getting_married.htm - (the list is a download link near the bottom of the page called list of recognized solemnisers) - we registered our marriage there last week and have yet to meet with our priest (we've only confirmed he will do it over the phone) so as i said didn't need anything from him and sounds like you are well prepared with your other checklist items so you are good to go :) Also don't think there is a time limit on registration as long as it is done 3 months before your actual wedding date - hope this helps and best of luck with the rest of your planning :bounce

That's great girls thanks for the replies. I really appreciate it. We just booked our cake to and my mam said to me I should slow down a bit!! As I will have nothing to do next year. I said that's my plan!!! And the registering is important to do so want it out of the way ASAP just hoped that when I rang them to make appointment they wouldn't say to me ' your way to early you have over a year left so wait another couple months' before the wedding in november 2012 and I'd rather get it done by jan the latest!

OK I am confused reading the posts here! Apologies if I am not thinking about the same thing. We have our pre marraige course done and we are getting married early July. The only thing though about registering the marraige is you need to have baptismal and confirmation certificates which have been issued within 6 months of the wedding date itself, is this right or am I thinking of a later stage?!
It must be within 6 months but before 3 months as far as I know?! Am I right or am I thinking of somthing else altogether?! That is what they told us at the pre marraige course and my brother had to do the same with his certs as he was not getting married in his own parish. I was baptised in a different parish to my own parish now so I would need to get a copy of my baptismal cert and then the h2bs two certs too. Now am I thinking of a different stage altogether?! I am confused!!!

Hi ya. I can't help you I'm sorry as I haventa clue, but I was thinking myself at what stage do you use the baptismal and confirmation Certs but you would think that the marriage registration crowd would inform you on there checklist to provide them documents to but they don't!!

Hi Lor1 and Harv2010 I too thought all the paperwork bit's and bobs were confusing too :dizzy but now that we have gone through I will try to help - first up your Marriage Registration is completely different to when you meet with the priest and all paperwork is seperate - both things require different paperwork (and some of the same) I had a thread before about registering marriage with the state and here is the list of what they require:

BluefishJD wrote:Hi all as I said in previous post receive a letter and info from our marriage registration office and thought it would be healp to post the checklist they have given - from the other posts I think a running theme as office requirements can vary from county to county but below is what we got - hopefully this will be helpful and good for future reference and thanks to those again who added to this post.

MARRIAGE NOTIFICATION CHECKLIST

Both Parties MUST attend the appointment together.

Each Person must bring their Original Documents:
Passport - N.B. A photocopy of the passport photo page must be supplied. This photocopy should be in colour, and best quality, other wise a passport photo is required.

Original (Full) Birth Certificate, for both parties, and photocopy of same
N.B If either party was born outside of Ireland, a Birth Cert bearing an Apostille Stamp from the country of origin is required. (We had to do this as my bride to be is not from here - we had to send her Birth Cert to the Ministry of Foregin Affairs in her Native Country, had it back within 2 weeks)

Nature of Ceremony (Civil/Religious)

Name of Registered Solemniser

Name & Date of Birth of both Witnesses (must be over 18)

Proof of Address in the form of a Utility Bill (And photocopy of same)

P.P.S. Number

IF DIVORCED
Irish Divorce - original or a certified copy, granted Under Section 5 (1) of the Family Law Divorce Act 1996, stamped by the relevant Court or solicitor (and photocopy of same)

Foreign Divorce - please contact the Registrar prior to your appointment

IF WIDOWED
Original civil marriage certificate (and photocopy of same)
Original civil death certificate of late spouse (and photocopy of same)

IF YOU HAVE A CIVIL ANNULMENT
Original Civil annulment court order (and photocopy of same)
A letter from relevant Court, confirming that no appeal has been lodged against the Nullity Order

FEE
Prescribed notification fee of €150 (Non-refundable). Additional charges apply for outside venues.

Other Notes
At the notification meeting, you will be asked to sign a declaration that there is no impediment to your marriage. If you are having a religious marriage, you will also be given the MArriage Registration Form, which is authorisation for the marriage to proceed. This Form will be signed by you, your witnesses and your Solemniser on the day of the marriage. The MRF should be returned to any Registrars Office within 30 days, following which, your marriage will be registered.

Now we have yet to meet with our priest but the list for that is different slightly and this is were your baptismal Cert / Confirmation Cert and Letter of Freedom come in to play as these are the pieces of info that the priest needs - you also need your pre-marriage course cert to prove that you have completed a course and also think you need to bring the documents you received from the registration office to the meeting with the priest (These I don't think are essential but probably best for him to have a look over them anyways?) - whilst with the priest there is other paperwork to complete - as in a pre-nuptiall enquiry form - the following is some info I got of the http://www.gettingmarried.ie site

Church Regulations

Every couple marrying in the Catholic Church are required to give a minimum of three months notice to their priest and complete a Pre Nuptial Enquiry Form. The form is completed a meeting with local priest of each party.

There are at least three forms that you need to get before going to meet your priest.
1. A recently issued copy of your Baptismal Certificate
2. A recently issued copy of your Confirmation Certificate
3. A Letter of Freedom from each parish you have lived in since you were 18.

These forms indicate that you are a full member of the Church, and that there is no record of you having been married previously in Church. Or in the event of your having been married that the previous marriage ceased, normally when your spouse died.

I hope this helps and clarifies what is needed and for whom - best of luck with your continued planning :D

bluefish good woman for clearing that up for me, a mate of mine is getting married april 2012 and is doing her pre marriage course today and i was asking hr about it and she told me all what you said about we do not need babtism cert and confirmation cert for the registering the marriage, but when we go to see the priest near the wedding we have to show him the baptisimal and confirmation certs but my local priest asked me did i get christened in my local town and did i make my confirmation in my local town, i told him yes i did and he said "Il sort them forms for you so" but didnt tell me anything else so its good to have it all cleared up in my head also!! but the priest cant get you them forms until 6 months before your wedding!!

When you have your date set for the registration appointment, I'd recommend you make a point of marking the occassion and arrange a special evening for yourself & H2B to celebrate. :embrace We went for a lovely meal and as my H2B said we are now half married :D
