Anyone planning a wedding in Ireland but living abroad?

Postby cashorty » Fri Feb 03, 2012 4:22 pm

Hi everyone,

So after two years I'm finally approaching the finish line. First the positives - Didn't lose any weight but found the dress, saved more money than I expected so we're coming in under budget, and, most importantly, my relationship is stronger and more wonderful than ever before! My h2b is perfection personified!!!

However, I live outside of Ireland. I'm sure this isn't a unusal thing because so many people have had to leave the country in search of work. I'm lucky I found somewhere in Europe so I can fly home half a dozen times a year because we are going home to get married.

I thought it might be useful to have a thread that caters for brides like me. My family and friends still don't get how much pressure there is on you when you live outside the country and are trying to organise the big day. Here, at least, I might find like-minded individuals who can benefits from useful tips I have or can share tips they have!

My first tip - make sure you have a fast internet connection and be prepared to be a hardass with businesses that haven't embraced the 21st century and don't reply to emails for literally weeks! It's so frustrating. I know internet services aren't great in Ireland but most don't even acknowledge the fact that they've kept you waiting around for a response to a query! Half-way through, I decided enough was enough. I'm trying to buy Irish and fortuately that doesn't mean I have to compromise on service!

Tip number two, don't be afraid to DIY it! Even though I'm abroad I've really enjoyed doing little DIY projects for the day with my h2b and it will feel all the more special because we did it alone but together. :smitten It does mean that I have a suitcase full of wedding stuff when I fly home, but it's worth (I hope)! And I've even posted things home!

Hope that's of use to someone!
Kind of a long post! Sorry!

Can't wait to hear your tips xxxxxxxxxxxxx :smileybride

:bluewave I'm planning from abroad too. I don't have the added benefit of going half a dozen time in the year however! We went at Christmas and got loads done and are going 1 week before the big day. A lot can be done from abroad and the internet is your best friend!! :mrs2benut

My suggestion (maybe more relevant for those living outside of Europe), send home a box of your invitations and have someone there mail them out for you. That will save you a ton on postage fees!

Great thread Cashorty! :highfive

Thanks MrsCB2b!

I won't know what to search for on the net when it's all over!
I'm a wedding web search expert at this stage! :mrs2benut

But despite all the stress, it's been a blast! Happy planning! :D
