buying dress online v buying in bridal shop

Postby mrs LOC to be » Sun Aug 07, 2011 12:29 pm

Hi all

Im looking for a little bit of help or maybe some re assurance.Iv seen gorgeous wedding dresses on the web (light in the box &dinodirect) for a fraction of the cost in the shop. Has anyone bought from either of these sites .I am just worried about the quality of the dresses and of course it is very important to look AMAZING on my wedding day .

In your opinions would buying on line be a big risk ?

I bought from a birdal shop for the following reasons...
* The excitement of trying the dresses on.
* The fittings
* The security
* An excuse for a few days out with the girls to go to the fittings
* I knew exactly what I was getting

But thats not to say that by getting a dress online things would have been any different...
They are usually cheaper online but mostly replicas of designer dresses. I have a say I wouldnt care about wearing a replica of a designer dress so long as it was made well... If I could have gotten my dress online I probably would have! Maybe there is someone on here that could give you some feedback on these sites?

I was looking at buying online and there have been loads of brides on here who have bought online and been thrilled with the quality, both of bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses but for me its just the uncertainty that puts me off so Im keeping an eye on sample sales etc. instead as just cannot afford the full wack. Definately I agree you should go around to a few bridal shops not just for the excitement of trying them on but also to see what styles suit you should you want to buy online, have a lookie about, you never know you might come across a real bargain!

A friend of mine bought a dress on line, I think it may have been lightinthebox, but cannot be sure and the quality of the dress was not good.
She has had to buy another dress.
I bought my dress on sellmyweddingdress.net, and went to the girls house tried on the dress and bought it then and there.
So its really hard to know what you are getting online.

I originally was going to buy online,as I thought I didn't really mind about the dress. Turns out I was wrong! The dress became very important to me, and as there were a lot of poorly made ones online, I ended up buying it in a shop. I also had a look out for second hand dresses, but couldn't find the one I wanted anywhere, or even anything similar for my size and height. I am officially too tall (even without heels) for all secondhand dresses. :yeah

That being said, after I joined here, I found a lot of reviews of certain sites, like lightinthebox, that brides have been more than happy with. BM dresses are one thing to buy online, you just have to take a leap of faith with your own dress if buying online, as the quality may not be perfect for the price you are paying. I say go and have another look at second hand dresses. You would be surprised with what you can find!

I bought online. Tried on dresses in bridal shops and then ordered a similar dress made in China. Dress arrived 2 weeks ago & is fab. I was involved in every step to approve pleats, beading etc. When my dress arrived I expected to need alterations or the hem changed but as its a custom dress it fits perfectly. I LOVE it! Its exactly what I wanted.
PM me if you want any details or you can read my previous posts.

If you are trying to save money I have a suggestion. I tried on my dress in a boutique in cork and it was quite expensive. I didn't buy it as I reluctant to spend that much so I made sure to take down the name of design and brand and went looking - found it in USA and UK for so much cheaper than in Ireland. And found discount designer places in US that could order it from China for you. I ended up buying it in UK as with America you could get grabbed for sales tax on delivery, but by ordering in UK I saved 800 euro on the exact same dress. Pretty amazing. I could have saved up to 1000 if I had ordered from America but I was a little cautious, and just ordered from a regular boutique in England.

That is a great saving! I tried to do the same, I priced my dress in the UK (as mine was by a UK designer and it would be cheapest there) but I could only find it for €150 cheaper out of 12 boutiques, when you factor in delivery and alterations it wasn't worth it. Glad somebody got a great deal!

Hi everyone!
I bought my wedding dress online and saved €750. Rk Bridal in new york the dress is a genuine designer dress and with the money I saved on my wedding dress I can now afford to have another 1 or 2 bridesmaids!! If ordering online make sure you get someone to take your measurements for you and order a size up if unsure! It is easier to take a dress in than to let it out!!

That's exactly where I am at too, would love to get the web addresses or names of the shops on ebay that any Missies bought their wedding dress from and would personally recommend. I have seen a few recommendations for Light in the Box ok but are there any others I wonder ?

Girls, if you order in plenty of time at least you feel the risk is less. Worst case scenario you can have it re-made and you'll still have saved a lot. I was happy to risk it as the dress was less than a third of the price. I had allowed for customs and getting it adjusted here but didn't need either of those so saved even more!
PM me if you want to know anything.

Have you tried the barnados bridal shop in Dublin ?? I have heard nothing but great reviews about it!! Im a little bit cautious about buying off the internet. My friend got married last year and ordered hers online from America- when it arrived the colour was completely off compared to what was shown, also the material was not of good quality. My cousin bought her bm dresses online last year also, material was fine, but the sizing was wrong (despite giving exact measurements) , so it ended up costing her more as all dresses needed alterations. Or try donedeal!!
