Cake Question!

Postby schmoo_mammy » Thu Aug 25, 2011 3:32 pm

Hi Missies!

Just a quick cake question! (try sayin that 10 times really fast!!) :D

Anyways, my mam, FMIL and aunt are making me wedding cake - one tier each - which is great as all I have to do is get it iced! Im planning on having a 6", 8" and 10" 3 tier cake - fruit cake, choc biscuit and lemon sponge - with each tier stacked one on top of the other so which order should i have the tiers?? Is choc bisc heavier than fruit?? I guess the sponge tier is the lightest so that will be the 6" one but after that im stumped!! Dont want my cake to collapse halfway through the reception!!! :D :D
Could I beeeeee any more excited??!!

I'm not sure about order of cake due to weight but I would recommend that what ever you decide on get rods that will support each layer (they are inserted in each tier to support the one above it, this should prevent it from collapsing!!

Maybe if you go to a good baking supply store they can advise you better on the rods and how they work!

The chocolate biscuit cake is the heaviest, then fruit, then sponge. I was asking this in a bakery and they said that.

Disney is right, you can have them in any order once you have dowling (not sure how to spell it) rods, the sponge can go on the bottom then if you like :)

When I was asking about mine they said traditional fruit cake is heavyiest (then the nice old lady baking mine went and made all 3 tiers instead of just the bottom one!! it was so sweet of her and shes so excited about it, but now we are having just fruit cake!!)

I'm going to make our cake so have been doing a little homework!

There is a brilliant youtube channel on how to make/ice/stack the cake so it'll give you great ideas and make it clearer! The dowels can be bought really cheaply on baking sites or ebay and you can get cardboard or harder plastic- weight dependent probably.

Good luck with it!

If you put them CBC on bottom, fruit in the middle and lemon on top you don't need to dowel them, if you're putting them in any other order you would need dowels alright. Normally CBC doesn't need dowels at all but with a fruit and other tier on top of it you could use them in the CBC just to be safe.

Hey I make wedding cakes and I've done it either way depending on what the bride and groom want. All you need are the cake dowels and they'll support the cakes (none of mine have collapsed on me yet!). I usually order the supports from decobake in Clane (they have a terrible website but if you phone them they will help you out. Also there are plenty of websites you can get them on, just do a quick search.

Ok, making my way down the to do list & trying to keep costs down - cakes n flowers are next - I know I need them, but honestly not pushed about either. I don't want it to be obvious that I'm skimping tho - cakes . . . how much? Do you need enough to give everyone a slice? Also, would it be really tacky to have artificial flowers in the church? Anyone know who does it, or where i'd buy them?

Wow, that's deadly! Sure no one knows any diff and they're all drinking later on :) 500 - 600 is just sooooo much money for a cake. What was the name of the lady's company & I'll check out the site.
Thanks a mil!
