Chinese lanterns

Postby taz30 » Thu Nov 03, 2011 9:59 am

Hi all, does anyone know of or is anyone thinking of using these for your wedding? I love them to be honest but would love to know size they are before they are opened! Was thinking it might be a nice idea to have one per couple on the tables but don't know if they are packaged small enough?? Any ideas?

the only things i'd say it, you can only use them in certain weather.....first of all and then depending where you are think you might have to let the firebrigade know, found this out from a friend using them near a beach last year for a hen party - they had champers and let off the lantern down by the beach...just something to think about...love the idea of them though, very cheap off the internet ...best of luck

Hi taz30 - these are spectacular!! We love them and have used these alot over the last number of years for different family occasions and special days etc seen them first when abroad at the Festival of Lights and over in Poland celebrating Solstice - we have already worked these into our wedding and making it a special surprise for our guests who will all receive one (I have my two young cousins on hand to pass them out!) In their packaged state I'd say they are about 18inchs square - will need to double check the measurement - have loads in the house with halloween just passed:) They would definitely cover a full table setting and then some if placed at each persons table setting. I also agree with all of the above comments they are very weather permitting as in not so good in rain or breezy days - sister was at a wedding in August where they were all brought outside for the launch of the lanterns (think they had 5 to represent different things) but they only managed to get one up which then came down shortly after it went up so the weather does play a big part also like Dec2012 said it is wise to notify the fire brigade and if you are anywhere near the coast good sense to give the coast guards a call too just so they don't think it is anybody in distress - Also as they are made from rice paper (which includes most of the good quality one's that you can buy) they are delicate and I just wonder is it a good idea to have these sitting at the table settings and then to be placed on the ground, under the table etc etc until it comes time to launch them - I'd just fear that some of them might end up getting damaged? Just something to think about - best of luck with continued planning.

:happywave

I've seen these in the shops and the packages are about 30cm x 30cm. prob too big to put on the table. You could always put them on the chairs if you wanted to. We have bought some ( waiting on delivery) but we're keeping them aside until we're ready to use them after the dinner. If your within five miles of a airport or the sea you need to notify the local authority/coast guard incase they are mistaken for a distress signal and they are not supposed to be used near a forest area.

If you do decide to go ahead and get them there are eco friendly ones you can get, as some have wire in that isnt biodegradable and it can harm animals. HTH :D

Ah thanks a million for that reply Bluefish! We are getting married in Feb so I suppose it will be very hit or miss whether we will be able to use them in the end! Outside the room for the reception is a courtyard which is quite sheltered so might be able to use them there but will check with the hotel first! And we are getting married on a Friday and most of the guests will be staying the Sat night too so we may have to shots to get it right depending on the weather! I absolutely love them though! Thought it would be nice to have them on the tables but didn't realise they were that big! Was going to put one on every second table setting and then some sparklers or something on the other ones!! Sure I will sort out a volunteer like you have suggested and keep it as a surprise for after dinner or something! Thanks again for your advice!

No problem - the courtyard sounds ideal and we are getting married in march so not far behind you :) We did a number of tests on different nights/weekends this March and got great results each nite - luckily like March - Feb can often be still quite crisp and cool in the evenings so a night with minimal wind will just be perfect - all the best with it

Also just a handy tip for you which i thought of for ours - is to supply your Volunteer with lighters as well when he/she is giving out the lanterns - just for non smokers who wouldn't have a lighter!

Hi Missies

We supply chinese lanterns which are metal free and safe to the environment. As everything burns in them, they burn out completely in the sky which means there is no residue coming back down which can be dangerous to animals (metal wires have caused injury in animals).

The condidions need to be right to use these. If it is very windy there is a risk of them coming down before they have burned out and causing a fire.

They are beautiful in the night sky and are a very romantic thing to do. They have been used for centuries in Asia to wish good luck among other things.

Guests can write wishes for the couple on the lanterns (as long as they don't tear them). A marker is best for this.

As was said before, its important to notify airports and/or coast guard if near an airport or the coast. They have been mistaken for distress flares and the life boat is sent out, which costs a lot of money. The coast guard is more used to them now though, as they have got more and more popular over the last couple of years.

Our lanterns are currently on sale at €1 each and they are metal free and safe to the environment.

If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

We're hopefully having these lanterns too taz30. I need to contact the hotel and see what they say but I hope it'll be ok. We're getting married next to a lake so if the wind was working with us it'd be fab!! We got ours from a friend in China and we let one off a few weeks ago just to see and it was class :)
Fingers crossed eh x
