Does VAT reduction cover alcohol

Postby TGR » Thu Dec 01, 2011 11:30 am

Hi girls,
Just wondering if anyone knows whether the VAT reduction that came into effect July 1st covers alcohol that will be served during the meal? We managed to get money off for the menu, but the woman from the hotel just emailed saying that the VAT reduction does not cover alcohol at all.

Nope afraid not, it just covers certain services. Watch out for the budget next week that VAT could very well change!!!

Good point bingowings my venue was very co-operative when the initial VAT decrease came in which further reduced our per head price but if things in the VAT change does that mean they'll go up again and like BingoWings has said there is no VAT reduction on the Vino or alcohol served during the meal :( we were quite lucky to get FREE Corkage and as there is always great deals on wine we shall be supplying our own:)

This will probably depend on your contract with the hotel as to whether their total price quoted is inclusive of VAT or not i.e. If it's not inclusive of VAT then whatever the VAT on the day will be charged. You'll have to confirm that with your hotel.

Great stuff shall keep this in mind - I know when the initial vat drop was introduced she gave it to me there and then so presume if it goes up now that this will in turn increase the price as I just checked the T&C's and says inclusive of "new" VAT charges (Actually says until June 2013?) - but as they were very co-operative to give me the initial discount with lower rate when it came in without any hassle then it only right for them to increase if the VAT does change - fingers crossed it won't!! many thanks again for sharing your wisdom!

thanks for your answer bingowings. Atleast we got 1.8 euro off per person for the meal, so that's something to be thankful for.

Bluefish JD- you can always ask your venue to honour any quotes that they made to you previously. I i.e., you can say that the booking was made based on a certain agreed price per head, and so it is only right that they honour that agreement. Unless of course there is something in the contract that says otherwise or if you were quoted a price that did not include VAT. Luckly you, having free corkage! Our hotel charges 15 euros for corkage, so it doesn't make sense for us to buy wine and then pay for corkage on top of that, so we're just getting the hotel to supply the wine.
