Engagement ring?

Postby sadlier86 » Sun Nov 06, 2011 12:33 am

Hi does anyone know how much it would cost to melt and old gold ring (my mams engagement ring) to make a new ring? Would love if anyone had any info!!

Hello,
Its not really an answer to your question but anyway.....
Why do you want to get it melted? I presume its fairly old?
Recently i got engaged and decided to bring my Mums engagement ring(over 30 years old and never been cleaned/polished) to the shop where i got mine, they cleaned it but and polished it...plated the platinum claws etc....it went from a pretty but fairly standard ring to a beautiful sparkly expensive looking ring......that i would be proud to wear ...so in my opinion you could try that first as its quite cheap about €40 :)

If you really don't like the ring as it is old fashioned, getting it melted down is a very good idea, as the price of gold has skyrocketed in the past few years. I would say that you would be looking at a few hundred euro to get it made into something you like. I don't know how much exactly. I am having my wedding ring made (but had my engagement ring made as well). I was charged £125 for the design process (in the UK), which was taken off the bill when I consented to having the ring made in that design. The bulk of the expense is the cost of materials, but I would estimate maybe €300-€400 for getting it made (excluding gold and any stones set). I could be wrong, and it might be much cheaper than that, but I certainly wouldn't pay much more if a goldsmith asks for it. Shop around and see what you can come up with!

I might be able to help a little bit. I chose to get my engagement and our wedding rings made by a guy out in Santry in Dublin. When we were in chatting to him, he told us that the basic cost of making the ring would be E500 because of the price of gold - that was 18ct he was talking about. He's a manufacturing jeweller and showed us his work room and everything. If you were to take your ring in to him he could probably use all the material in the ring to give you a brand new design for you as well. He did tell us that his preference is to work with 18ct gold - just so you're aware. I'll pm you his name if you're interested because he's not a supplier on here. He made my friends engagement and wedding rings and did a fantastic job.

Would say all jewellers wud be different, it won't cost 150 everywhere, some will be more, some less. Depends on the quality of the gold you have, what extra work has to b done and stuff.

Price a few places first before you go with one of them.
