Hi congrats and welcome and delighted for you.

An engagement party is whatever you want it to be hun. We had a few drinks in our parents house the night we got engaged and then the next weekend we booked a room in the back of a bar and had all our friends join us. The room didn't cost anything to book so it was just celebrating with a good few friends on a night out and we enjoyed every minute of it and according to our friends so did they!!

Enjoy oh and happy planning x

You don't have to have an engagement party if you don't want to. I didn't because I live in England and all my family are in Ireland. I was going around work grinning like a cheshire cat for a week and had people asking me what had me in such a good mood. Once we had family told I told people at work, but there was no expectation of a party. Personally, it's an expense I didn't want to have because I'd rather put that money towards the wedding.

Don't worry about bar food. Start the party about 8.30/9.00pm by that time people will have had their dinner and sure if they are hungry they can do what most people do after the pub and head to the chippy! Seriously you don't have to do too much just a good night out will do and nobody will expect anything else, they will just all be so delighted for you. Oh and practise the smiling and the "thank you very much" and "yes it is beautiful isn't it" and "I love it" and "I'm not sure what I'm going to do wedding wise yet" and this is the main one - you will have to tell the story of how he proposed about 100 times!!! By the end of the night I felt like getting a microphone and a few speakers and just telling the story to the whole pub just so I wouldn't have to say it again (honestly I loved telling people over and over again!!).

I got engaged in February and I still enjoy looking at my ring!! I don't think that's ever going to go away. Enjoy every minute of it.

Ive never seen money given at an engagment party - you will probalby get gifts like candless, frames etc, but most people (that I know) would not give a gift, just a card. (I know getting money isnt your aim).

Regarding the party itself - some people have parties and some dont, its entirly up to you how you want to celebrate. If you want a nite in the local with food, have it, if you want a few friends for drinks at home - have it.

Most importantly - enjoy what ever you decide to do and congrats on the engagement. Let the fun times begin :bounce

Hi and congrats :happywave
We jsut sent out a text to all our friends and family to say we were going to the pub on such a night for a few drinks to celebrate if they wanted to join us. The local put on finger food for us (sandwiches, sausages and goujons) as we brought a crowd in that wouldnt ordinarily be there so there was no expense on us. It might be worth seeing if your local would do that? It wasnt a party as such but an informal get together!
