Hi everyone, Just wanted to ask about favours. We wanted to give a donation to a charity in Africa, and had discussed with a few what the options were. Some will give you small cards for the tables saying "in lieu of favours we are donating to ....". However I have now just finished reading a few books on famine in Sudan and the struggles people went to to get to aid camps, and I think that i should donate to Concern as they are the only Irish charity operating out in Kenya with the current drought. I’m deeply disturbed by the idea of the journeys people are going to go get to aid camps with the current famine. Just wondering if I should design my own little cards for the tables to say what we are doing instead of favours? Has anyone done this? It seems ridiculous of me to contact a charity to ask if they do cards for us when they are tryingto save peoples lives

Hey livingabroad,

We want to do the same give a donation in lieu of favours. I know that some charities do give you cards to distribute at your wedding but Im not sure about Concern. Did you look at their website for any info? I think you could safely ring up and ask the question. The person at the end of the phone isnt the one that is personally trying to save everyone and you are doing you bit by making a donation so I reckon just ask them. If they dont do cards you could make up your own ones. Vistaprint often let you print business cards for free and you could design something on one of them to put at each seat?

Im am going to donate to my local animal shelter and i'll make my own little cards, or maybe buy a key fob/pen off the charity. Could u buy sme jellybeans r something off concern to use as favours? That way u are donating to charity and ur guests still av a favour, even one between 2 is loads.

I donated to the dspca, they were going to give me place cards but I had bought celtic ones to match my theme. Then they offered me these animal pins, but I said to keep them as it'd be more money for them. But they did have a graphic designer who volunteered for them and they made us a few A4 signs (that matched our theme) saying 'In lieu of wedding favours, Mr. Brídeog and Mrs Brídeog have made a kind and generous donation to the DSPCA'. They weren't overly fancy but we put two in frames and set them out beside the two table plans and also one in each bathroom so people would definitely see them (just in case they happened to miss them). Giving to charity is so much better than giving guests bags of sweets or a token they won't even remember a month after the wedding.
