Groomsmen Jobs

Postby feb2012 » Sat Jan 28, 2012 2:49 pm

Hi All, we are getting down to the nitty gritty now and I was wondering what I should be asking the Groomsmen to do on the day..

I have 1 of the Groomsmen looking after the envelopes but dont know what else to tell them.

Hi - I'm just having my Bestman and like that was thinking what for him to do! Obviously one of the main jobs for the Groomsmen is the organising of the Stag - but as I have decided not to have a stag I had to get him more involved in other ways - so himself and his wife are going to be our right hand people with respects to helping us do up the Guest Favors - Pew Decorations - Picking up the suits - he will also be driving himself, wife our maid of honor and her husband to the church and I'm afraid that is where my thoughts end on jobs in the run up to the wedding - On the day of the wedding like you I will have him looking after the envelopes and gifts and in general he is will be an extension of us to meet and greet guests and make sure they all ok whilst also accompanying our maid of honour up (and down) the aisle and for the second dance.

I also was looking around as this was a topic I too was thinking about and found some of this points which to be honest may be more relevant to you as I'm only having one Groomsman (the bestman) and sharing out other jobs to others:

Dancing with the bridesmaids in the first dance
Standing by the groom at the ceremony
Looking good - bathing is not optional. A shave wouldn't hurt either.
Keeping the party alive and "spiked" at the reception
Escorting the bridesmaids during the beginning and end of the ceremony
Helping guests find their places before the ceremony (boss around the ushers)
Attending bachelor party
Generally being around. 75% of the battle is just showing up.

from the above list I found online groomsmen have it soft really! compared to that of the bridesmaid but then again the bride does need more help and assistance but during the run up and actual day. Hope some of these help and best of luck with continued planning.

A lot of people dont have a separate usher at the church and the grromsmen can help with that also.

You are so right bluefishJD, they do have it very easy. As what you said are the things I have listed... But just thought there would have been more...

If I think of anything I will put it up here

Our best man was young, and was pretty useless despite making a lovely speech. But it takes more than a speech. I told him one of the most important jobs was to bring the green folder with the legal bit of paper, or the wedding wouldn't happen. He concentrated so much on that, that he pretty much didn't bother doing anything else. He lost the coin, lost the wedding cards we had for the speeches, forgot to pay the priest and sacristan, passed the book with the cards he received on the day and my BIL ended up minding them. Our groomsman ended up doing everything. Including running down town at 2.30am to find him in whatever pub he had absconded to at midnight with the 2.5k in an envelope to pay the band

So I would advise sharing the duties between best/groomsmen.

I remember reading your story about that... I have started to delegate jobs between the best man and groomsmen so far. 1 is going to look after the mass booklets, another the envelopes best man ensuring H2B arrives to the church on time and not hung over, like a few weddings I have gone to.

Bestman actually contacted us yesterday asking what we require for him to do...
I hadnt got a clue what to say.

With the gift of hindsight I'd have gone with my gut and demoted him to best man and made groomsman, best man, as he ended up doing everything on the day anyway. But even at that, I'd have divided the jobs between 3 of them. Unless the best man is super organised, there's no way he can take care of everything on the day.

I'd kick my husband into next week if I had to get him a babysitter to ensure he didn't show up hungover  :knockback

Ah yeah of course, my husband (I actually just typed h2b  ) went out the night before with his groomsmen, and my brothers and a couple of friends. He promised he'd be home by 12 though and he managed it, your h2b will be fine, cos he'll be dying to see you next day and won't want to be bleary eyed :D
