Good evening missis and mr's!
Right, have been a bit lazy with the wedding planning recently and need to get back on track!
I remember reading something about needing a birth cert and confirmation cert dated six months before wedding to have for the pre - nup?! Can somebody please explain it to me, need to get it sorted!!

Hope everybodys planning is coming along well :brideandgroom1

For the pre-nup (with the priest) you need a bapismal and confirmation cert for each of you which has not been issued over 6 months ago. If you are getting married in the church where you were baptised and made your confirmation the priest should have it there and be able to provide it for you.

You may also need letters of freedom from any other parishes you have lived in, some priests are more picky than others on this. If you email/ring your priest before the pre-nup he will be able to tell you exactly what you need.

Have you registered your intention to marry with the state/HSE?

Hey Glee - grogmg has outlined most of what's needed but i would reiterate the thing about registering your intention to marry with the State as our priest asked had we already done it and when we said we had he said to bring those certs/paperwork along as well as the Baptismal Cert, Confirmation Cert and the Letter of Freedom but I don't know if it is totally necessary for the State Registration just as long as you have current (dated within six months of the wedding) copies of the Baptismal Cert, Confirmation Cert and Letter of Freedom.
We have yet to meet properly with our priest (only talked over the phone with him) as we just got my B2B's paperwork from poland in the last 2 weeks so must get it sorted soon - thanks for the reminder :) Also good info on this specific issue in the Planning Guide section of this website so that might be worth a look also.

Thanks:) yes have registered our intent to marry two months ago. We are getting an affadavid(sp) instead of letters of freedom as our priest said would be easier then getting them from all the parishes we have lived in.We are getting married in a different parish from where we live so our priest said that we have to do pre nup with our own parish so i will ring tomorrow to make app and get those certs sorted. Thanks for your help:)
Actually one more question! - How long do the certs take? And also do we have to pay the priests for the certs? ( sorry that was two questions!!)

As we have yet to meet with the priest I have not got my cert's yet from the local parish office so don't know if there is a separate cost for these - in saying that we've already had to fork out €250 for use of the church so I would hope that my certs are included in this! (Yes we had to pay that for our church even though we are from the parish - when asked what the €250 was for she gave me such a round about answer that I just got lost and she ended by saying that we were lucky!! as if we were not from the parish the charge is €500! - all a money racket - and that's not including money for the priest - sorry sorry i try not to think of it as it just makes me mad!) I know when i was getting my Birth Cert at the state registration they charge me €10 so it could be something similar to this?? Maybe one of the MRS's on here might be able to help further?

When we were in Poland for August we made a visit to my B2B's local priest to talk to him and let him know what we would need Cert/Letter wise come the appropriate date (within 6 months) and we gave him a "Donation" which in turn, true to his word got all her paper worked sorted and stamped correctly and gave it to her mother to send on to us - he also announced our intent to marry three weeks running at weekend masses! The MIL was delighted haha...thinking of it now though maybe we gave him too much hahaha:) but it was only a donation of what we wanted to/could give there was no specific charge so free over there.

Oh I know bluefish! It is a money racket! We have to pay 400 for church, then donation to priest, then obv we had to pay for intent to marry and pre marriage course! its madness! But then I look at how much we are spending on the things we dont actually "need" and think that I should stop giving out ha ha
I wonder if we will have to pay priest doing pre - nup?! Probably:(

:yikes2 they are huge amounts of money to have to pay. I fully intend giving a donation to the priest and also to the church, of around €200 and €50 to the priest, it hasnt been mentioned to me about a specific amount to pay, though I never asked either.

Might contact my cousin about this as she got married there last year.

Oh one other thing for the prenup - have you done your pre-marriage course? You need that cert or stamp aswell for the prenup.

You can do the premarriage course as early as you like. Doing ours in January, kinda dreading it. We have to get Apostille Stamps on our birth certs (I was born in England but have lived here since i was 2 years of age, and h2b is from the north) so we are in the process of doing that at the mo.

I am kinda embarrassed about this, but didnt realise that you gave a separate donation to the church as well as the priest, what i mean is, we are giving money to the priest but didnt think we had to give to the church as well (or did i read yer posts wrong!!)

I wouldn't worry about that at all. My cousin had some weird african thing on his because he lived there till he was three^^ I'm not to sure, I am planning on giving one to both as many people say its just what you do. But I have never heard of it having to be an exact number?!?

ah idobelieveinfairys, read my post again!! When I read yours, it took me a while to figure it out, then i re-read mine and realised that i had forgotten to put a word in, so it wasnt making any sense at all!!

What I meant was, we have to get apostille stamps for our birthcerts because were not born here. I have edited above so that it makes sense now! doh!

If you are giving a large amount to the priest he may give some to the church. What I mean by a donation is towards the cost of electricity and heating for the wedding and general upkeep of the chapel, donation to the priest for his time on the wedding. I will be giving both envelopes to the priest on the day of the wedding with one marked as church donation and one for himself in a thank you card.

Thanks grogmg, that clears it up for me. The way its done in my home town is the priest gets about 250 so he must automatically put that towards the church (and keep what he wants/needs for himself). Cheers for that! :D
