I am utterly flabbergasted

Postby glitterbride » Fri Aug 12, 2011 8:48 pm

can anyone explain how it can be possible that a hotel will have a seperate corkage price for sparkling wine, we were told that our corkage was 10 euro a bottle but that it would be capped at 50 bottle so any we brought in after that would not incur a corkage charge.
we have bought our own dinner wine which is over the 50 bottles, the other day i askd hotel if we could bring our own sparkling wine in for drinks reception, i was told that we would have to pay corkage bc there is a different price for fizzy wine, and this is not inc in our capped deal.
is this utterly crazy, r we being taken for a total pair of idiots! i am really annoyed :o

ps they wont pass on vat reduction cos said that prices have gone up!!!!!!!!!

That different formate charge seems to be common in most hotels. And I've been told there's no reason for it. Challenge them, ask why there's a different charge.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. It's like saying if you want to have yellow chair covers instead of blue ones, then it'll cost you extra. I would give out STINK to them! Feck that! Fight back!

I tried to fight back and told them that i thought it was a crazy rule, i was told in no uncertain terms that i would have to pay corkage, they have me by the short and curlies now anyway so very little i can do!

I had a few hotels tell me a different price for sparkling when we were looking at venues and not 1 hotel could give me an answer as to why its just good old rip of ireland at its best i find it totally disgraceful.

Hiya - I think it is normal enough that sparking wine corkage is more expensive than wine. 10 euro per bottle is INSANE! :yikes2 We are having our reception in a 5 star hotel and we are paying SIGNIFICNATLY less that what you are being charged. How long ago did you agree on prices etc?

Sorry you are having drama so close to your wedding :hug2

I think the price difference is due to the extra time taken in pouring the sparkly compared to ordinary wine and also, the different / smaller "champagne" glasses are used.

:iagree i was told it's something to do with the glasses...something about them being more expensive, and also more delicate (i.e. easier to break) than wine glasses....bit of a silly reason, i agree! They're getting enough feckin money out of us!
