Passport in married name before wedding?

Postby mrswtobe » Wed Oct 12, 2011 10:09 pm

Hi missies, was reading an article about wedding planning and came across this quote for something which they said could be done 12 months prior to wedding: 'if you plan to travel in your married name then you will need to change your passport, do this now.'

Is this possible, how can you change your name before it's legal or is this bull crap?

This is something I need to find out too but like puddy2shoes I thought you had to send marriage cert off. I'm getting married June 2nd and will be on honeymoon when my passport expires. Was thinking I'd have to renew passport with my maiden name before the wedding and then change after the honeymoon. Seems like such a lot of hassle though so would be great if your article was right. Can't see how they'd do it without documentation. Def something to look into though :mrs2benut thanks x

I've seen that advice in a wedding planning book, but the book is from the UK. I think maybe its possible to get passport in married name over there before the wedding, but as far as I know you have to wait until after the wedding for an Irish passport.
I had a look at the Irish Passport Office website http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=254
but there is nothing on it about changing your name when getting married. In one of the lists of documents to send when applying it did mention "marriage certificate (if applicable)". Can't imagine they would let you get new passport in married name before the wedding - what if someone changed their mind and didn't get married? I think safest thing is to book the honeymoon in your maiden name and change your passport and everything else when you get back.

I phoned the passport office about this because mine was up for renewal recently and I'm getting married next March. You can't just send in your marriage cert and get the name changed you have to send in a completely new application and pay the fee again. I had no choice but to renew my passport in my own name and if I decide to change it next year I'll do it then but it's a bit of a money racket if you ask me so I'll probably just leave it as my maiden name for the next ten years.

You can, if you want, change your name by Deed Poll, you can go to the Central Office of the High Court, get the paperwork from them, sign it, get someone to witness it and pay the fee. All together it'd be about €50.00. Get a Solicitor to do it and it'd be a bit more. Complete waste of time though it's only a name after all and you can bring a copy of your marriage cert with you when travelling if there is any difficulty with your name in other countries.

I think I'll wait out the 10 years!

I can't imagine you can do this in Ireland without the marriage cert. I just got a new passport but I don't plan on changing my name anyway so no big deal for me

Hey Missies - Bingwings is right - new name new passport equals new application and full fee. I know for 100% certain that you can't get your married name on your passport until you have the marraige cert and even if you change your name by deed poll you have to show proof that the new name is the name you are using and for at least 2 years.
Just save yourselves hassle and book Honeymoon under maiden name and make sure that there is about 6 months validity on your current passport - each country is different but 6 months is about standard.
