Photographers.... what, how much.... so lost

Postby angsana » Tue May 18, 2010 4:27 pm

:? I'm all confused....
I thought I was doing great... venue, church, band, DJ - all done :bounce - and then I started photographer....

I'ld appreciate any tips, pitfalls, rough/guide prices for a decent photographer doing a Dublin area wedding. I'm doing small wedding so looking for someone to capture the intimatcy, off camera, informal style. Not sure on an album yet, might just get CD & do it ourselves afterwards.
I'm getting quotes anything from 1000 upto 3000 :yikes2

At least with bands & DJs while I may not agree with their prices... there was consistency and most of em pricing in or around the same. Playing one off the other made a deal I was comfortable with.

But now I'm stuck :crazy going round in circles, wondering what if's
Are the 3000 priced people just ripping me off, or do you really get what you pay for?

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated

have you looked for photographers here. i know some girls got great deals like 600 for ablum too. you should look at them, ask to see thier work and see who you click with. tell them what you want to spend and work out something then.

I got a photographer from castleknock in Dublin 15, it is a couple who do take the photos, in the morning the girl stays with the bride and the man stays with the groom so you get pics of both of them getting ready! Then they both do photos in the church and afterwards the girl takes the formal photos you want and the man goes around and takes pictures of the guests (sometimes without them even knowing). My fiances cousin used them last year and the photos were fabulous! It is 1600 for a DVD of ALL the pohotos they take and them she has packages for the albums but your under no obligation to get an album if you dont want!
Apart from there being 2 of them to capture it from both sides int he morning they also said theyll have us back to our guests at least an hour before dinner to mingle cos my brother wwas missing from the time he said I do til the bell for dinner at his wedding which I didnt particularly want! If your interested PM me and ill give you her details!

Angsana,

I posted this below on a previous thread - hopefully it will be of some help.

In my opinion there are major and minor issues to consider when selecting a photographer:

Major items:

Photography Style
Do you like their style of wedding photography? Initially check out their web-site, then view their sample albums.

People Skills - Experience
Will they be able to manage people for their photographs. Your photographer will have to assert himself on people without annoying them to get your photographs on the day and an experienced photographers will have encountered and dealt with more "awkward people" in his time and will be better equipped to handle whatever comes their way.

Likeability
Can you "get on" with them. After all you will be spending a huge amount of your day with your photographer.

Insurance
Are they insured? Accidents and illnesses happen - do they have professional insurance to cover this. Also, if you're thinking of going to a nearby ruin or castle for shots your photographers may be asked to show his public liability insurance. Insurance is an absolute must have for all professional photographers.

Equipment
What if their equipment fails on the day - do they carry back-up kit for this eventuality.

I would suggest that a failure on one of these major items is a deal breaker.

Minor Items:
Many of these items have been mentioned before but...
Can they do an engagement shot beforehand - how much?
What time do they start and finish?
How long will the formal shots take?
Precisely what is included in their wedding package?
If it includes a disk of photographs are the images printable to full size, e.g. high resolution and no watermarks
When will the proof book/selection disk be ready after the wedding?
When will the finished album be ready?
What are their payment terms? - deposit and final payments
How much are re-prints, if needed?
And, of course, it would be good to clarify that they will be happy to discuss an end of recession surcharge if the recession finishes between now and your wedding day!! - Only joking about this last one, honest.

One other point i would make, particularly regarding the €600 packages referred to above. If you read the posts regarding Folio32 you will see that at least 2 of the photographers had no experience - they had only done a wedding photography workshop and they were using the same models in their galleries.

I hope this helps and if I can help further don't be afraid to ask.

Mike May I just add that these are merely your opinions and not actual facts. For me, a lot of your "minors" are my "majors"

As for the list I posted.
None of those photographers have "no" Experience.
Let's just keep this nice and friendly before we start to make assumptions on other peoples work.

Thanks.

Absolutely, As I said in lline 2 of my post above - these are my opinions.

And you are right - it was an overstatement of mine to say that some have no experience - my apologies.

bride2be1 - if you don't mind could you pm me your photographer? and I'll have a goo.

:D Thanks everyone :D

Thanks to you all , I've got a plan... :clapper
I've made a check list of my important 'must-haves' and spammed about 10-15 photographers (based on the style/photos on their website/blogs).
Once they come back, if they meet the list & are roughly near budget, then hope to narrow down to 2 or 3.
Will then go meet in person & see who we "click" with (& of course make a deal :smokin )

(sorry... also luvin the smilies!)
