Wedding Cake

Postby BluefishJD » Thu Oct 13, 2011 11:43 am

:blue wave Hoping to get some feed back on this one and it's just in relation to the wedding cake, it's size and what's expected - Bascially a friend of our's who is a very competent baker (as a hobby) has offered to do our wedding cake which we are delighted with at as she has made cakes for other occasions for us and they have been delicious - but what i want to ask is the cake expected to be sliced and everyone get a piece? or is it more of a token thing were we cut the cake get the pictures and then divide between our family/few friends after - sorry if this silly question but just a bit clueless on this?

You see we are also thinking of having a couple of traditional cakes native to my B2B's homeland for when the hot evening buffet comes out - also struck a deal with our hotel to give us a "Trio" Dessert plate - so just think people would have enough dessert in them besides getting cake as well? I suppose as it is a gift and she is offering to do it my worry is I don't want her to have much bother with it and be putting her out expense wise on a big cake trying to provide a slice for everyone.

Usually cake is served with the tea and coffee course after the meal. Not everyone would be given a slice per say, its more like a finger/soldier of cake!If you wer worried there would not be enough in your cake you could always do up a tray of something like choc biscuit cake and serve that with cake. This would not have to be iced etc it would just be in the kitchen to be thrown into the mix when cake is being served out if you know what I mean. Not sure if I made much sense there but hope it helps!

Our woman is doing a 3 tier cake and we will only cut so much of it on the day and save the rest for the next day. The Hotel will box up the rest of the cake for us - I want to try and keep 3/4 of the chocolate biscuit layer of the rest of the day. The other layers are fruit cake (cuz it's Christmas) and baileys something or other so I am not too bothered about keeping those layers!! As Mayb2b says the cake is usually cut in soldiers and that is what my hotel is doing too.

Cheers for the responses - I suppose I was thinking actual slices but the finger idea sounds good and would spread it out more and also like the idea of the boxes and have people take them home!! Cheers:)

Made perfect sense :clapper and this is were the cake/confectionery from my B2B's native homeland could come into play so there would be choice for people

Many thanks again great "Food for thought"

You could also think about serving the cake with the evening buffet. I think you would probably need less of it then, especially when you have other cakes to serve then too. Often people don't really feel like cake immediately after a big dinner and dessert. I think the most important thing is to make sure your friend who has offered to do the cake is as good at decorating/icing as she is at baking - it seems to be pretty much compulsory to have photos of you cutting the cake!

Cheers MrsTK2B - will keep that in mind but she seems a pretty dab hand with it so am confident it should turn out ok - and think it would go farther as you say if presented with the evenning buffet and could mix one of the other missies idea's of having the boxes (or some way of wrapping it) there and they can take it home if they wish. Again thanks for your input.

I would agree there, usually the cake comes out at about 11pm with the evening food. Our hotel actually charges €5 per per if we want the cake as the dessert, but free if we have it in the evening!

Our cake will be for about 160 people, which is 30 more than our day guests, but with the evening guests coming later, we are having a cutting cake as well for a further 60, just to make sure people have enough. Take note, if you choose not to have the traditional fruit cake, people will usually have a few 'fingers' of it, as it is a treat and nobody really likes fruit cake, so I would ensure that you definitely get enough cake for everybody. But if you are going down the traditional route, you won't need that much as people take fruit cake home and then it sits there for the next month as nobody wants it. :frown
