Wrap/cover up with wedding dress??

Postby MrsTK2B » Tue Nov 29, 2011 9:22 pm

Hi girls,

I thinking about getting some kind of wrap/shrug/jacket to go over my wedding dress. The wedding is at the start of May so hopefully it wont be too cold. Could still be a bit chilly standing on a beach to get pictures taken though. Also, I really wanted a dress with sleeves and couldn't find any and ended up getting a strapless one, which the shop is adding straps to for me. I should have been more patient and kept looking but hated dress shopping!

I've done some searching on-line but anything suitable I find only comes in ivory and my dress is white. I think it probably needs to be quite plain as the dress has a kind of pattern in it. This is the dress
http://www.sotteroandmidgley.com/dress. ... le=RSM1107. If the link doesn't work it Jamilia by Sottero & Midgeley.

I also have a really long veil, though not totally sure I will wear it. I asked in the bridal shop about some kind of cover up but they thought I was mad to want anything over the dress at a May wedding. Has anyone got any opinions on whether its a good idea, or would just look silly? Or suggestions of where to find something suitable? Thanks.

It's lovely I would deff go for somthing plain as a warp/cover up, what sort of material are you looking for or do you have any in mind?? Also are you looking for a long sleved or just for your shoulders?
All you need is Faith..Trust & a Little bit of Pixie Dust

I don't know about the material yet. I think probably three quarter length sleeves or maybe long ones.

I had the exact same issue as you. I wanted something with sleeves, and I definitely wasn't going strapless. Yet... I ended up with a strapless dress that I love! The lady in the bridal shop designed a short cape with box pleats at the back and loose 3/4 length sleeves and a hood for me. It is perfect! She has her dressmaker (who is also a fashion designer) to make it for me. Bridal shops should always be helpful when it comes to giving you what you want! Maybe go to another bridal shop and ask them what they could suggest? I would never wear a dress with no cover up, not even in the height of summer in Ireland. It could be freezing!

That sounds lovely letmeeatcake, perfect for a winter wedding. My dress is due in the shop at end of February so I suppose I can wait until then to sort it out. Though maybe there will be more wraps etc in the shops over the winter.

I'd get something made if I had to but think it would be easier and cheaper to buy something ready made than find a dressmaker and find fabric and choose a pattern. After I we booked the wedding and I ordered my dress we decided to buy a house so the wedding budget is now a bit tighter.

Hey mrs, you should try shops that stock communion dresses, my bridal shop had communion dresses in stock & had loads of boleros to go with them, one sat perfect with the dress I'd on, they'd fit an adult too!!

I was panicking over this the other day because I couldnt find anything nice to go with the dress, but then and I had my dress fitting on Saturday and low and behold, the dress actually CAME with a wrap! I had no idea. So have you double checked to see if your dress has a wrap with it? I'm so glad I didnt spend money on something when I didnt even need it lol!

Thanks Claire, I'd already seen the blog but none of them really work. I don't want to be wearing fur in May, lace is beautiful but too fussy with my patterned dress and most of them are ivory not white.

RoctheFroc - that's brilliant that your dress came with a wrap. I don't think mine does but I might just wait and see when it comes in. They are sending extra fabric for making straps so maybe there will be some left over to use for a wrap/bolero, possibly with extra plain fabric added.

MrsMcCormack, that's a great idea I would never in a million years have thought of communion shops. I'm a size 14/16 so not sure I would get one to fit but with a bolero maybe the size doesn't matter. And
8 year olds on average are getting bigger so it might just work!

I think the plan now is if I don't see something in the shops in the January sales I'll wait til the dress comes in at end of February and if they send a wrap or extra fabric. Failing that I will check the first communion places, it will be the right time of year for them anyway. Thanks everyone.

I got a balero made out of extra material of my dress and the buttons from the train for the back and front of it. It was lovely when finally made.

Firstly your dress is fab :smitten I know what you mean about straps and sleeves, my mum was having fits about all the dresses I was trying on as none had sleeves or straps, my dress has straps, but getting them made a bit bigger.

I tink a little shrug or a wrap woudl be lovely, you might have enough spare material to get one made. Otherwise have a look on ebay and etsy. I had a look at the blog for wraps and shrugs from claire and was thinking would the cardigan that is on no.7 go with your dress. Its a plain cardigan, and I think it would be fab over your dress. Perhaps ring the shop and see how much it is and check what shades it comes in.
