New York City Wedding

Postby Mafiros81 » Mon Jan 04, 2010 7:52 pm

Hi all -
I've researched getting married in nyc and it seems so straight forward (compared to here) that I'm convinced that I'm missing something.
Am I right in thinking that all you need is your passport for id, a marriage license (obtained at least 24 hours in advance) and to turn up at city hall to do the deed?? :yeah :nope

Yes - as far as I'm aware as long as your marriage is legal in the country you marry, it's recognised here.

One of the girls from work got married over there and as far as I can remember she had to bring prove of her age i.e birth cert and then proof of idenity i.e passport or drivers licence something with a photo on it. Think that was it. Maybe you could ring the US embassey just to be on the safe side and also to find out if the marriage is defintely recognised here and theres no extra form you have to fill in. I got married in Italy and I had to go through the dept of foreign affairs. Better to be safe then sorry I know someone who got married in Spain and forgot to submit one bit of paperwork and because of that the marriage isn't recognised here. If he wants to make it legal here he'll have to get married again in the church or registrey office here .. god can you imagine that happening

...except for same sex marriages. But that's a rant for another day. :ranting

Might be worth checking with the US Embassy like the other girls said. I know in Canada you can get the licence no matter where you're from, but then in other countries you need Certificates of Freedom (Italy, I think?) The US is almost definitely the same as Canada though, but never hurts to check!

I am researching getting married in New York and you do not5 need the forms from Dept. of Foreign Affairs for marriage in A|merica. For the civil service you hav e to go in persons (the 2 of you) and apply for a licence to marry a\t City Hqall which cannot be used for 24 hoours. Then tur4n up up after that with the licence and that is it. I would like to have a blessing in a Roman Catholic Church after that. Any ideas for a church or priest that would do that at short notice. Lorna

I am researching getting married in New York and you do not need the forms from Dept. of Foreign Affairs for marriage in America. For the civil service you have to go in person (the 2 of you) and apply for a licence to marry at City Hall which cannot be used for 24 hoours. Then turn up up after that with the licence and that is it. Your marriage is recognised as a legal mariage in Ireland. I would like to have a blessing in a Roman Catholic Church after that. PLEASE DONT KILL ME!

But your marriage wont be legal in Ireland. I had a friend get married in Cali, her and her hubby were on hols, and went and got married. She came back to Ireland and had to have a civil here too. She dint give the state the notice they required, she didnt get a release letter from her church nor did the hubby. Also she has to spend about 3k transferring paperwork from American documentation to Irish. And then you need to register your marriage in America, and have it transferred to Ireland.

Its a LOT of work. But can eventually be legal.

Im sorry to be the one to burst the bubble...

I have checked with the Dept. of Foreign afairs and I am talking about a Civil Wedding in City Hall which is properly registered and performed at least 24 hours after getting the Licence. A church wedding is different. Unlike Ireland a religious cermony in some countries does not count as a Legal wedding and you have to have to have a civil wedding as well to make it recognised. Lorna

Cool, Then go for it!

All I know is that my friend was told all the same things and it cost her and extra 3K of paperwork and an extra trip to Cali to retrieve paper work.

If your sure about it then go for it. :)
