Transporting My Wedding Dress

Postby Piratefairy87 » Sun Aug 07, 2011 7:02 pm

Im getting married next year in Portugal but I have no idea how to transport my dress over there!!?? Someone suggested posting it over and others say I should just take it on the plane with me or have it in my checked luggage. Im not keen on the idea of putting it in my checked luggage as I have seen how bags can be thrown around etc. Any ideas on what I can do?

Only one thing for it hun, take it on the plane with you and dont let it outta your sight! Call your airline and ask them what the procedure is, im sure they deal with this all the time. x

Yeah I think you are right!! I dont think I would be able to relax at all anyway unless I was certain it was ok.

My friend contacted her airline to ask about this and was told she could buy an extra seat for the dress?!! Not sure if that is the norm for all airlines. She packed it with her luggage in the end and it was fine, she did steam it to get any creases out though..

A friend of mine flew Ryan Air and booked a seat for her dress - she was happy enough with that. Probably keep an eye on the website for cheap seats!

Oh... look what I found http://www.ryanair.com/en/questions/can ... raft-cabin

Can I carry my wedding dress in the aircraft cabin?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each passenger is permitted to take one item of cabin baggage (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Please note that your (handbag, briefcase, laptops, shop purchases camera etc. must be carried within your permitted 1 piece of cabin baggage.

As long your wedding dress fits within the above dimensions when packed, you can take it into the cabin with you. Please note that we do not have any storage facilities on board to hang or store items. If the wedding dress does not fit within the cabin baggage dimensions, then it should checked in as part of your checked baggage allowance.

Alternatively, you can purchase an extra seat for the carriage of a wedding dress in the cabin.

To book an extra seat for the carriage of a wedding dress - go online and select 2 seats - the first seat should be booked in the actual passenger's name and other seat should be entered as ITEM SEAT as the Last Name and EXTRA as the First Name. The name EXTRA ITEM SEAT will then be displayed on the online boarding pass - see extract below of an online check-in boarding pass.

Please note that passengers purchasing an extra seat must use online check-in. The passenger's travel document details must be entered for both seats when checking in online. Online check-in is available from 15 days prior up to 4 hours before the scheduled times of flight departure. There is no cabin or checked baggage allowance associated with the purchase of an extra seat.

Passengers who have booked an extra seat should arrive at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled flight departure time. If you are unable to locate two seats together on the aircraft please contact our cabin crew as they will be in a position to ensure that you have two seats together.
