Happy New Year!

We hope you’ve all had an amazing Christmas and New Year and that you’re ready for lots of fun and wedding planning in 2018 – we certainly are! We are kicking off the fresh new year with a fun, laid-back and vibrant destination wedding in Belgium. Luke and Heidi had a relaxed approach to planning their Spring wedding and included lots of personal elements throughout the day.

“Luke and I met when I went travelling around Australia in Perth. Luke was working in the mines in Western Australian on a FIFO basis and on his time off he stayed in hostels around Perth. Two days after I arrived in Perth, Luke showed up in the same hostel as where I was staying and the rest is history!” explained Heidi.

The couple remained in Australia and Luke proposed at one of their favourite places, Gilgare Retreat in Margaret River.

With thoughts of an indie style wedding, Luke and Heidi chose to marry in April last year.

Heidi wore a dress that Luke bought for her as a Christmas gift three years before their wedding day. “Around Christmas in 2014 we were doing our Christmas shopping, I tried on my wedding dress, but decided not to buy it because it was pricey and I wouldn’t have many occasions to wear it. We went on buying another dress, but Luke went back and bought me the Carla Zampatti dress as a Christmas present. At the time of his proposal I hadn’t had a chance to wear the dress yet, so I decided that this dress would become my wedding dress,” explained Heidi.

The couple held their ceremony in a quaint church in Zonhoven, Belgium. Heidi wrote the ceremony herself combining both their native languages. “Seeing as the wedding was attended by both my family (Flemish) and my husband’s family (English) I included both languages in the ceremony booklet. Hats off to the priest who fluently switched between Flemish and English sections!” added Heidi.

“We included our daughter Stella’s baptism in the wedding ceremony. My favourite moment was seeing her in the cape that my grandmother made for my mum when she was baptised,” said Heidi.

Heidi’s Wedding Planning Advice

Delegate everything on the wedding day itself; ask bridesmaids, groomsmen or parents to look after a certain part of the day. Try to divide the day up between different people to keep it manageable for them. Invest in a good photographer, it is the only memento of your wedding.

Ask advice to time the different parts of the day. Get a clear idea of how long the make-up/hair, ceremony, photos, etc. will take so you can make a flowing day planning.  And finally sit down during the ceremony, you’ll be on your feet (bride in heels!!) most of the day.

Heidi handmade lots of the special details throughout the day including this lovely welcome sign – the hearts are made up of maps of both Heidi and Luke’s hometown.
