“Gary and I met on a popular travel website. I am from New York but was working in Dublin. One evening I went to a popular online forum to find ‘things to do in Dublin’ – Gary happened to be there giving good advice about his great city and after a fun and interesting but short exchange, Gary spontaneously asked me to meet him. I agreed and we met each other the very next day in Dublin, for both of us it was love at first sight!” explained Amanda.

After a couple of years dating the couple spent a lovely Christmas together enjoying the traditions of the season, with one very special surprise for Amanda.

“Gary knew he had to surprise me at this very special time of year, so he hid the ring at the bottom of my stocking. After we opened the gifts under the tree and in the stocking, there was just one little box left to open.  As I pulled it out, Gary knelt on one knee in front of the fireplace and proposed on Christmas morning,” added Amanda.

The couple took a casual approach to planning their wedding and after weighing up the different options decided on an intimate approach.

“We had a small beautiful ceremony among the gorgeous French Alps. We returned to Ireland to register our wedding legally and held a photo shoot with Mario on the streets of Dublin city – just the two of us.  Afterward, we had two wildly fun non-traditional receptions in Dublin and New York with our family and friends,” said Amanda.

Both Amanda and Gary wanted to be ‘in the moment’ at their wedding and celebrate in a way that was meaningful and a true celebration of their love for each other.

“We had many highlights. From family and friends travelling near and far to be there with us, to the amazing sing song circle to end the live music, there are so many it’s hard to choose! We both agreed that walking through the city with Mario for the photo shoot was so much fun and the warm and receptive reactions of people is something we will never forget,” added Amanda.

Amanda’s Advice

Ultimately, do what makes you happy – you don’t have to conform to the societal ‘norm’ if that’s not what is comfortable for you. Many others will have opinions but this special time in your life should be first and foremost about celebrating your love and union together as husband and wife. Everything else should be secondary.
